The Village of Northfield is a small, affluent north suburban community just 15 miles from downtown Chicago.
New residents choose Northfield, sometimes referred to as "Winnetka's country cousin" because of its near-rural atmosphere, for the ecellence of its schools, its relative affordability, its range of housing options, and its proximity to major employers, transportation and shopping.
Population, housing
Northfield has approximately 5,500 residents in 2,100 homes that come in a wide variety, from small condos priced in the mid $100s to sprawling residences priced in the millions. The majority of Northfield's homes are on wooded lots of more than an acre - unusually large for Chicago's northern suburbs.
Schools
Northfield has some of the most outstanding public schools in the state, and is part of the widely-known New Trier School District.
Parks, recreation
Recreational venues are plentiful in Northfield and surrounding areas. In addition to its parks and community center, Northfield is adjacent to large forest preserve areas, the Skokie Laggons with their excellent fishing, and a few minutes from Lake Michigan. There are half a dozen public and private golf courses within two miles of the Village, which is home to the Sunset Ridge Country Club and Middlefork Tennis Club.
Shopping
Although shopping in the Village itself is limited, Northfield does have a major grocery store and pharmacy, and most parts of the Village are less than a 5-minute drive from three major upscale shopping centers: Westfield Old Orchard, Northbrook Court, and The Glen Town Center.
Transportation
The Edens Expressway (I-94) borders the eastern part of the Village, and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is 3 miles from the western parts, affording easy access to downtown Chicago, O'Hare Airport and most of the Chicago metro area. The Pace bus system has several routes that serve the Village, and provide access to nearby Metra train stops.
Commercial uses
Northfield is also home to retail shops, office complexes (including Kraft Foods' global corporate headquarters) and light industrial uses that provide it a diversified real estate tax base.
