Using Googlegroups

Organising membership of NonGeeks Googlegroup

The next step is to organize Googlegroup access for the newby. This is best done by sending the newby’s email address to one of the network convenors or Googletools managers, as listed at the top right of our contact list.

Let the newby know the address of our Googlegroup home page at:

http://groups.google.com/group/nongeeks

This page is not a public website.  It is only accessible to members who have been invited to access this page - and when they have first "signed in" to their Google (Gmail) account.

Make sure that the newby understands that this is a private web page, accessible only by invitation to members of the NonGeeks network. In order to have full access our Googlegroups home page, it is necessary to first open your Google account.

Also explain to newbies how the group email works - namely, that they can now receive all emails sent around the group. They can choose how they receive messages from the group by going to the googlegroups website and then click on "Edit my membership".

In order to email all members of our network, they simply email to the one address: nongeeks@googlegroups.com

Welcome message to new subscribers to our Googlegroup

[ NB.  "subscribe" and "subscriber" is computerspeak for joining an email list.  It does not imply the payment of moneys.]

(Below is copied some boilerplate which will be sent to new members of the network when they are first joined up to the our nongeeks email list.)

I have added your email address directly to the email membership list of the NonGeeks network, the computer chat group which meets first Thursday of month at the Irish Club, Weston.

You will now receive emails about the group's activities, will be able to follow group discussions via email and contribute to those discussions or put questions to the list. The group email address is <nongeeks@googlegroups.com>

If you wish to "unsubscribe" (that is, discontinue) this group email service, instructions and a weblink for this purpose are at the foot of every email you receive from the group. Just click on that link, follow the instructions and you will receive no more email from this googlegroup.

If you would like to have access to the group's private website and to use the website to have fuller access to the group's information, you will need to "subscribe to" (that is, "take up") a free Google account and then receive an invitation from the nongeeks group to join it again, using your new Google account identity.

If you would like some help to make it easier to go through the process of getting a free Google account, please look at the web page:

I hope you will enjoy participating in the group.
