Fall 2009 The (Love) Story of Myrtle Willoughby and Willough Myrtleby (and the Neighbors) Written by Cassandra Adair (BC'12) Directed by Katie Lupica (CC'11) October 18th - 24th, 2009 Lerner Black Box Theater Spring 2009 (February 2009) May I Please Speak? (April 2009) Three Spoons Fall 2008: (September 2008 - November 2008) NOMADS Theatre Workshop Inspired to give more new playwrights and theatre artists at Columbia University the chance to learn and grown in a hands on environment, NOMADS developed the NOMADS Theatre Workshop. This is a unique program for aspiring writers, directors, and actors. Three teams, each consisting of a playwright, a director, and actors worked to develop a series of entirely new student-written plays, and one musical. Starting in September, these teams collaborated to develop their works for full production in Fourplay ( A Night of Three Plays) on November 7th and 8th. All three teams and the NOMADS board came together every Monday night to present materials and provide each other supportive feedback. This was a truly collaborative theatrical venture, and the only program of its kind on Columbia’s campus. (November 7th and 8th, 2008, Lerner Black Box) Fourplay (A Night of Three Plays) Fourplay was a full production festival of the works developed in the NOMADS Theatre Workshop. The plays were Inside, Out of the Rain by Daniel Leong, directed by Charlie Dinkin, about three people in a bar who were haunted by the demons of their homicidal pasts. Fall of a Sparrow by Ittai Orr, directed by Brian Bene followed a soldier fallen in the Iraq war as he returned home as a ghost and to face ultimate family treachery. Plan B, an original musical written by Daniel Mitura, music and lyrics by Rebecca Greenstein, directed by Natalie Glick was about a scientist who attempts to build himself a perfect woman, with unexpected consequences. The production was really succesful— with two sold out shows and great audience feedback. Spring 2008: (April 11th and 12th, Lerner Black Box) Trees Like Nails Trees Like Nails, written by Will Snider (CC '09), is a dark coming-of-age- tale that follows two brothers who find the mutilated body of a girl in the woods. Over one night, six small-town teens are covered in the trail of blood. In his play, Snider confronts anxieties of mortality, personal choices, and sexuality in a sharp, witty voice. The play was a tremendous success, with four sold out shows in the Lerner Black Box. In August 2008, Trees Like Nails was produced professionally as a part of the New York International Fringe Festival. NOMADS is proud and thrilled to have been the first to produce this exciting play and encourage Snider’s professional career as a playwright. |
