Sprains

Symptoms and Treatments

Sprains occur when the ligaments and tissues around the joint are

overstretched or torn. The common places for a sprain are the ankles

and wrists. However, because some sprains are associated with other

injuries it can be very difficult to tell a sprain from a fracture. If in

doubt, always treat such injury as a fracture.

The victim may feel pain in and around the joint, faintness, and cold.

the person who helps should make sure that the victim is in the most

comfortable position. Avoid in moving or touching the injured joint.

Help him to rest them on a pillow or other soft objects to control the

swelling and pain.

Roll a bandage firmly, but not tightly, over the injured joint. After ten

minutes place an unwrapped ice pack over the bandage to reduce the

pain and swelling.

Always seek medical advice in case a fracture occurs.
