Burns

Symptoms and Treatments

Burns are caused by contact with a great source such as hot metal, electricity or chemicals. Burns are classified as superficial; partial thickness; full thickness. The amount of pain of pain felt is not a true guide to the severenity of the injury because superficial and partial thickness burns are often more painful than a full thickness burn in which the nerve endings have been destroyed. Victims may complain of severe pain or no pain at all; cold clammy skin; nausea and/or vomiting.

Treatments of burns varies, depending on what type of burn it is. They could be from chemicals, electricals, lightning strikes, mouth and throat, sunburns, and burn blisters.

  • For chemical burn: if the chemical is in powder or crystal form, first brush off any loose particles using a small piece of cloth and then cool as for any burn. They need to be cooled for up to fifteen minutes to adequately cool the damaged tissues. You may need a medical advice to counteract the effects of a chemical burn.
  • For electrical burn: when an electric current flows through the body, damage results to all the tissues in its path. A contract burn where the electricity entered the body and an exit burn where it earthed will be there. Injuries need treatment by cooling once the power source is safe. If an electricity passed through the heart of the victim, you may need a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • For lightning strike burn: there will be an entry or exit burns. The results are usually severe and cardiac arrest are commonly occurs. Call an ambulance and do CPR.
  • For mouth and throat burn: when the victim swallowed hot food or drink, superficial burns may exist. The victim may suffer severe swelling of the lining of the mouth and throat. Narrowing and closure of the upper airway may result. While waiting for the ambulance, give the victim cool fluids to drink but avoid giving iced drink.
  • For sunburn: cold running water will give some pain relief if the burn is not extensive. Give drinks of clear, water-based fluids to maintain the body's fluid balance.
  • For burn blisters: If blister's are seen in a burned area, padding should be applied to avoid accidental bursting. If the blister is painful, seek medical advice.

Remember that it is best to seek for medical advice; a doctor may drain the pain under sterile condition.
