The latest and the greatest epic poem in Samskrta

I recently (in July 2009) digitized the latest Mahakavya (Epic Poem) in Sanskrit - Śrībhārgavarāghaviyam (Of Parasuraama and Raama). Composed by my Gurudeva, Jagadguru Ramanadacharya Svami Rambhadracharya and released on October 30 2002 by the great former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajapayee, Bhaargavaraaghaviiyam is an epic in 2121 verses spread over 21 sargas of 101 verses each, composed in as many as 40 Sanskrit and Prakrit metres during the sixth Payovrata (six-month milk-only diet) of Svami Rambhadracharya. I have typeset the original text using LaTeX and am happy to share it with you.

The epic poem was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 2004. It is now considered by some to be a part of "b.rhaccatu.s.tayii" along with the earlier "b.rhattrayii" of Magha, Bharavi and Sriharsha.

You can download a Sanskrit only manuscript (without transaltion, but with an three useful appendices of metres) here [742 KB]. Sanskrit and grammar lovers are welcome to read and enjoy the same.

The epic poem has a hitherto unparalleled feat - three (yes three!) ekaakshari shlokas - single letter verses in the twentieth canto (20.92, 20.93 and 20.94) in which Lord Parasuraama eulogizes Lord Rama. The verses are just the play (vilaasa) of Mother Sarasvatii. Understanding them will be an achievement for Sanskrit students, reading them will be a delight for poetry lovers, and parsing them will be a great challenge to both grammarians and machine parsers. You can find the three verses, with the anvaya and artha by my Gurudeva himself here [72 KB].

If you enjoy reading the original verse, please buy the book. The hard copy of the epic poem along with a Hindi commentary by Svami Rambhadrachya himself is available from the following locations. The proceeds from the sales of the book go to charity.

If you happened to buy the hard copy (only one edition with 1100 copies printed so far in 2002) you may find a very useful errata list that I compiled here [433 KB]. The document, [almost] entirely in Sanskrit, lists in a long table (and a LaTeX "longtable") the list of publication errors in the original Sanskrit text in the first published edition of the epic.

Unfortunately there is no English translation so far of the epic :(, but hopefully I shall write one sometime in future :).
