Objective: The primary purpose of this project is to build a GIS (Geographical Information System) based mobile sampling platform for measurement and reporting of Ultra Fine Particles (UFP's) Particulate Matter (PM):Tiny solid or liquid matter suspended in gas or liquid is referred to as Particulate Matter (PM) or fine particles. The size of PM usually varies from 10 -1000 of nanometers. The metric used for defining the size of PM is aerodynamical diameter. And particles with very fine diameter, i.e., less than 100 nanometers are referred to as Ultra Fine Particles (UFP). The following image gives better picture of UFP's and human hair with regards to size. Sources of PM: PM originates from naturally occurring phenomenon such as volcanic eruptions, dust storm, forest fire, sea spry etc. Also human activities such as burning fossil fuels mainly Diesel in vehicles, power plants and industries emit large amounts of PM into the atmosphere. Effetcs of PM: Prolong exposure to PM has adverse effects on health such as, Asthma, lung cancer, premature death etc. |
