What we are...

committed to Children

From a modest beginning as a Saturday morning, bilingual story-hour, the Niños Adelante program has grown to include more than 150 children.
The children, and also often their parents, learn English through songs
and games, attend a lively story hour and spend time playing computer games. Each family has at least one library membership, and every child can use the library's children's room and check out books, games and stuffed animal friends to take home for the week.

Niños Adelante is dedicated to giving these children a step-up in the educational system. We achieve this by;

Engendering a love of reading

Building self-esteem through planned successes
Getting the children comfortable with computers
Introducing English at as early an age as possible.

Just as Head Start in the United States has given a leg-up to millions
of disadvantaged children over the years, Niños Adelante, the children’s program of the Oaxaca Lending Library, is striving to make the same kind of difference in the future of Oaxaca.

The opportunity...

a future free of poverty

Niños Adelante reaches the city's disadvantaged children, many of whom have some indigenous heritage. As is well documented, better education results in an improved standard of living that positively affects entire families and communities. Since the program's emphasis is on reading for fun, learning basic English and simple computer skills, its educational boost early in life prepares the children for a future free of poverty.

How you can help...

Niños Adelante is funded entirely through private donations and is staffed solely with volunteers. Cash donations are vital. While donations of any amount are always welcome, here are a few ways for you to contribute.

Fund a program
Your donations support any number of activities and supplies, from as simple and affordable as purchasing a month's worth of healthy snacks to underwriting a much needed room air conditioner.

Adopt a student
It costs a little more than $2 a week for each child in the program. Your 120 annual donation can open the 21st century to a boy or
girl in Oaxaca, Mexico. (Your donation can be automatically charged to your credit card at 10 USD per month.)

Buy a library membership for a child
Share your love of reading with a Oaxacan child by donating to the Niños Adelante membership fund. Your $10 yearly donation will give the opportunity to a child and their whole family to borrow books and expand their world through reading and learning.
