BASIC BASKETBALL SKILLS
Dribbling
Perhaps the most misused skill in basketball that any young player can master is dribbling. Those who have watched the best basketball teams in the world play realize that dribbling is used only as a weapon on offense. As a well-accepted tenet, less dribbling makes better basketball.A particular situation on court during a game should determine when dribbling should be used. For instance, to get away from a defensive trap; to get into a better position to shoot the ball; to create a clear driving lane to the basket; or to create an opportunity for a better-positioned teammate. Dribbling must be done the correct way.Foremost is that a dribbler must keep his head up, looking for opportunities to open up an offensive play.A dribbler must be able to see a well-positioned teammate who has a better chance of scoring.Or better yet, a dribbler must be able to spot an open teammate, one who is free from a defender in front of him, for an uncontested shot.Again, dribble the ball only when it is clear from a given situation that it is a positive move either for the dribbler or for a teammate. Like any other skill in any other sports game, dribbling can be improved only through constant individual practice.Remember too that basketball is played with two hands. Therefore, practice dribbling using both hands. If you are right-handed, practice dribbling twice as long with your left hand.If you are left-handed, give your right hand the extra work. 7 Kinds of Dribble Protected or Controlled Dribble |
