Edward Gribbin was born on 7-4-1812 in Cornwall. He was the son of Edward & Ann GRIBBIN who were married on 10-12-1809 in Cornwall. Edward Gribbin married Mary Ann Oates on 24-7-1834 in Cornwall and had four children before Mary died in the 1st Qtr of 1848 at Mt. Hawke, Cornwall. Mary Ann Oates was born on 16th April 1810, presumably in Kenwyn, Cornwall. She was the daughter of George Oates & Elizabeth Trezise who were married on the 21st August 1802 at Kenwyn. Edward & Mary Ann had 4 children: 1)Mary GRIBBIN. 2)Elizabeth Ann GRIBBIN. 2)Edwin GRIBBIN. 3)James GRIBBIN. The family appear in the 1841 census living at Short Cross, St. Agnes, Cornwall. The census records Mary's (1834) name as Elizabeth, not Mary, but the age is correct. Edward (30), Copper Miner. Mary (31), Elizabeth (5). Also living in the house are 4 related copper miners: Elisha Gribbin (16), Elijah Gribbin (14), Samuel Gribbin (12) & John Gribbin (10). After Mary Ann's death in 1848 Edward married Mary Jeffery on 26-9-1848 in St. Agnes, Cornwall. Mary Jeffery was baptised 17-11-1822 at St Agnes. Her parents were Thomas and Grace Jeffery (nee Tregaskes). This family appear in the 1851 census of Cornwall living in Meneguisey. Mary, aged 30, is listed as the head of the house as Edward was working at the mine at the time the remunerator called. Mary is aged 15 and is listed as a stepdaughter. She was working as a copper miner. Edwin is 8 and James is 6 years. The Gribbin's arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on the 'Confiance' on the 12-9-1854. The 'Confiance' sailed from Plymouth, England on the 10-6-1854. The passenger list had listed: Edward GRIBBIN (age 42), Mary (age 32). They had three children with them: Mary aged 17, Edwin aged 10 and James aged 8. The shipping record states that they originated from Devon in England. I would assume they settled in Greenock, South Australia as that is where James was reported as living when he married. Mary Gribbin (senior) remarried later in life. She married John Phillips on 9-6-1886 at the residence of the groom in Kadina. She was 63 years old at the time. Edward GRIBBIN died on 24-1-1884 at Wallaroo Mines. Age 73. He was buried in Kadina cemetery on the following day. ******************************************************************************************************* James GRIBBIN was born on the 11th October 1845 at Mt. Hawke in St. Agnes, Cornwall. At the age of 8 he immigrated to South Australia with his father and stepmother. As an adult he worked in the Kapunda mines and lived in the Greenock/Kapunda area. James GRIBBIN married Caroline BUNNEY on the 25-1-1866 at the home of Thomas BUNNEY in Allen's Creek, north of Kapunda. I found record of six children born to James & Caroline GRIBBIN: 1)Louisa Sybella GRIBBIN. 2)Cordelia (Delia) Caroline Oates GRIBBIN. 3)Augusta Mary GRIBBIN. 4)Beatrice Bunney GRIBBIN. Beatrice moved in her mid-teens to Broken Hill, probably with her mother. She married in Broken Hill and lived there with her husband Thomas Henry TONKIN. She had 4 children before dieing of cerebral haemorrhage in Adelaide. She is buried in West Terrace cemetery, Adelaide in an unmarked grave. 5)Edward James GRIBBIN. 6)Thomas Oliver GRIBBIN. James & Caroline lived in Kapunda, South Australia for a time before moving to the 'Copper Triangle' on the upper Yorke Peninsula. After James' death, it seems as though they moved to Broken Hill in the late 1880's when the copper mines of the Yorke Peninsula were scaling down. James GRIBBIN reported on his marriage certificate that he was a miner. Caroline GRIBBIN remarried a Stephen Moyle (born Cornwall-father was Henry Moyle-he was a mason) on 4-1-1896 in Adelaide when she was 50. Caroline Moyle had a shop in Broken Hill which was a general store. Caroline GRIBBIN died (as Caroline Moyle) in 1912 in Broken Hill and was buried on 8th November. Stephen Moyle died at the age of 87 on the 14-5-1933 at Tumby Bay. |
