Standardized Testing

Although most people do not like teaching to a test, over the years I have learned to make peace with the TOEFL, Test of English as a Second Language, and I believe this test can indicate future academic success.  Here are some of the TOEFL accomplishments I have been involved with as a teacher and coordinator in the College Prep Program at Hawaii Tokai International College.

Official IBT Testing Site

On March 27, 2009, HTIC administers its first Internet Based TOEFL as an official testing site.  Setting the school up as a testing site was one of the most challenging things I have ever done period.  From coordinating with technical support at home and in Malaysia to getting Test Center Certified, this was an exercise in persistence.  The pay off was grand.  We had 7 candidates come for the test with some flying from other islands in Hawaii.  It was a beautiful thing to see the height of testing technology running at our school.  Now to begin integrating the IBT into our curriculum.

TOEFL Longitudinal Study

This study now combined with the Coordinators annual report traces the entry and exit TOEFL scores of a representative sample of our students as they enter and exit the program.  Putting these scores together took me into a new world of spreadsheets that I was not used to even as a computer geek.  The study also demonstrates how successful we have been at teaching students core skills required to live up to this international standard.
