Educational Technology

When I first starting working at Hawaii Tokai International College I was a technology novice.  Now I am the administrator of a learning management system(Moodle) and a full out eportfolio and social networking system running off software known as Elgg.  I have integrated technology in all my classes, my department, and have even begun to influence school wide implementations.  Please have a look at some of my Educational  Technology projects:

Google ePortfolio

As administrator of Google Apps for Education at Hawaii Tokai International College, I have gone full steam ahead in adopting the Apps suite for our next generation ePortfolio.  This system will provide faculty and students with a personal webspace in which to collect and present learning artifacts.

Student Portfolio System and Social Network

The Student Portfolio System has brought the magic of ePortfolios to our department.  Running off software know as Elgg, the SPS is a blogging platform, a file repository, and a Facebookesque social networking system all-in-one.  As administrator and only trainer of this system, I have watched it grow from just a few users to over 160.  What has been most successful in my opinion about this network is the formation of the Classroom without Walls community where students have reflected on all the wonderful field trips they have been on.  Other communities include one for our own department that stores all of our important files, communities specific to classes, and most recently one for service learning.  I have really enjoyed reading the post of students and fellow faculty.  More importantly I have begun to understand what features both technical and contextual make an eportfolio really tick.  The eportfolio sphere is a place I intend to do a lot of future work, hence the ePortfolio you are looking at right now.

Moodle

Moodle is an open source online learning management system that allows instructor to provide students with a virtual space to access class information, submit assignments, take quizzes, participate in forums and pretty much anything else you can imagine. I have been the administrator and trainer for this system since its beginning in HTIC where it was used simply to submit syllabi.  Since then it has traversed departments and holds over 30 active courses. In addition to putting my own courses up on Moodle, I maintain the front page, and create accounts and courses for other instructors. I provide training and support for the faculty and I am currently working on a big upgrade system stabilization. Please have a look at one of the video tutorials I developed for the HTIC faculty.

The CP English Project

This was one of my first real jaunts into the world of web design.  Our administration asked our department to come up with an assignment students could do while preparing to enter our program.  So we decided to make a website that helped students learn the most frequently used 1000 words in English.  Using software known as Hot Potato the College Prep faculty at the time developed a series of tests which I then mixed with some basic HTML to create The CP English Project.  This simple site is still going strong and jump started me into a whole world of educational technology.
