Project Green SWEEP

(Sustainable Wetlands Environmental Emphasis Program)

SWEEP the way to a Cleaner Environment

The NHS Green SWEEP project brings all disciplines of science together to divert run-off away from the school’s  baseball field and an open area near the agriculture department’s livestock barn to create a sustainable wetland monitored, protected, and used as an outdoor learning lab in future years by students of Newton High School.  With teacher guidance, science students are designing a new wetland area at the future home of "Newton High School". The goals of constructing a wetland is to improve the environment, and provide a permanent field classroom where students can become proficient in field observation and data recording techniques.  Students will also expand the school’s recycling program by building a compost shed and recycling plant and animal waste into a natural fertilizer for wetland and horticulture department plants.

It’s amazing to watch students truly interact with nature. This project has opened their eyes to the problems and concerns of our environment and motivatived them to want to help"
