NHS Dues: If you have not already paid your annual membership dues please do so at the November meeting. Dues are $10 and can be paid in cash, money order or certified checks. (FVHS no longer accepts personal checks.) Nominations for Junior Representatives: Due to Ms. King or Mrs. Daniels by 2:45 p.m. on Friday, November 6.
Fuquay-Varina Education Summit: NHS members interested in volunteering to help out at the Tuesday, November 10 Education Summit should contact Ms. King or Mrs. Daniels by Friday, November 6. We need volunteers to greet summit participants and help out during the evening. Volunteers needed from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. You can earn service hours for participating.
Adopt-A-Highway permission forms: Please submit to NHS officers, Mrs. Daniels, or Ms. King by Tuesday, October 20.
Induction of new members: Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. in FVHS' gym.

NHS Candidates: The letters containing the Faculty Council decisions re: your membership will be mailed on Wednesday, September 23. Please expect them at your home address on Thursday or Friday. If you don't receive your letter by the end of the weekend, please contact Ms. King. CURRENT NHS MEMBERS: Welcome back! There are two important things for you to take care of by Sept. 18.
1) All members will be required to provide an e-mail address and subscribe to the e-mail distribution list. Please do the following no later than September 18:
- Select/create the e-mail address to which you want NHS information sent.
- From that address, send a message to: BengalNHS@GMAIL.COM
- In the subject line please type your first and last name. You do not need to put anything in the body of the message.
2) Please download and review the Recommitment Memo and complete the signature page by September 18. (Memo is located under the Forms tab.)
Please remember that our monthly meetings will be the 2nd Monday from 2:40 - 3:40 p.m. Our first meeting is Monday, September 14.
Members are reminded that you may only miss one meeting per semester. NHS members who are absent more frequently may face disciplinary action from the Faculty Council. This could include probation or dismissal. Thank you for your interest in NHS! The NHS selection period begins on August 27 when eligible students can begin picking up application packets. This packet will provide extensive information on the process for applying and being selected for NHS.
Please know that deadlines are not flexible -- it is critical that you stay on top of things. Please ask if you have any questions!

Meet outside of the 800 building (pod) at 2:30 p.m. Please dress appropriately. We'll have drinks and snacks after we're done.
2009-10 NHS OFFICERS: Juniors interested in running for an office for next year should give Ms. King or Mrs. Daniels your name, the office for which you want to run, your 4th period teacher and classroom #, and an e-mail address. You can do this by putting the info. on a piece of paper and turning it in to room 126 or 807 or e-mailing Ms. King using the address to the left. May 5 Teacher Appreciation Activity POSTPONED: Based on feedback from NHS members we have decided to postpone the Teacher Appreciation activity and social scheduled for this week. Many NHS members wanted to participate but had conflicts due to AP review sessions and testing. We'll announce information regarding rescheduling soon.
SENIORS: This year at graduation your membership in NHS will be recognized by your wearing a gold tassel and light blue cords. The NHS will pay for your cords and you will be responsible for your tassel. Seniors voted on this option on April 27-28 and the vote was unanimous. ATTENTION SENIORS: The sale of the graduation stole has been suspended until further notice. Mrs. Daniels and Ms. King will speak with seniors at the April 20 meeting to discuss some changes that will be made for graduation. If you have not yet ordered your stole please do not worry -- the deadline for ordering your graduation materials will be extended. You will get all of the information you need on April 20.
ATTENTION SENIORS: THE PURCHASE OF STOLES WILL BE SUSPENDED FROM MARCH 31-APRIL 3. PLEASE PURCHASE YOUR STOLE BY 2:30 P.M ON MONDAY, MARCH 30 OR ON EITHER APRIL 6 OR 7.
Purchase your NHS stole until April 7 before/after school in room 126. The cost is $18.00 and you can pay by money order, certified check, or cash. (Please bring exact change if possible.) Personal checks are not accepted per FVHS policy. Please note that purchasing a stole is optional -- seniors can borrow a stole for graduation but they will have to return it immediately after the ceremony when they pick up their diplomas.

4) Ms. Michelle Lewis needs some help with spring cleaning! She has bookshelves to move and file cabinets to empty. Contact Ms. Lewis at mlewis5@wcpss.net.
5) Mrs. Cotton needs help switching items to new bookshelves. She'd prefer to do this next Monday (3/16), Tuesday (3/17), or Thursday (3/19). Please contact Mrs. Cotton at pcotton@wcpss.net.

7) If you're looking for a long-term service commitment to earn a larger number of hours please contact Mr. Barlow in room 311. He is looking for students who would be willing to help raise/lower the US flag each day, as well as students who could help set up/take down the traffice cones.
At our Monday meeting we will talk about some upcoming group service opportunities.
SENIORS: NHS graduates will wear a white stole over their gowns to recognize their achievement rather than the gold tassel used in past years. A picture of the stole is available in the window of room 126. Seniors may borrow a stole from FVHS (which must be returned immediately after the graduation ceremony when you pick up your diploma) or purchase their own. Details and a sample of the stole will be shared at our March meeting.
CONGRATULATIONS NHS MEMBERS: Every single FVHS member met the scholarship/academic requirements for the Spring 2009 review! Let's work on making sure we all meet our service, character, and leadership standards and keep true to the NHS pledge taken at induction.

This is a required meeting for all members. We have a lot of important things to do, including discussing our first service project and selecting officers. Please see Ms. King before Monday if you have any questions or concerns.

Our NHS chapter will select four officers each year. Those officers, and their basic responsibilities, are:
1) President - Provides overall leadership for our chapter and ensures that our chapter and its members are fulfilling their duties and responsibilities. Presides over NHS meetings and functions.
2) Vice-President - Provides leadership to our chapter and assists the president with carrying out his/her responsibilities.
3) Secretary - Keeps the official records of NHS activities, including meeting minutes and attendance.
4) Treasurer - Keeps track of NHS revenue and expenses and helps to plan the budget for each year.
Our officers are very important to the success of our chapter; please consider running to be an officer! The time commitment is not excessive, but you will participate in one other meeting per month with Ms. King and Mrs. Daniels (Ms. Everett) to help plan the activities for our chapter. In addition, as officers you will be expected to attend and lead all other NHS functions.
DUES: Members should pay their NHS dues by Friday, November 21. Your $10 dues can be paid to Ms. King in room 126 before or after school. Dues can be paid in cash, money orders or certified checks -- FVHS does not accept personal checks. You also can pay your dus at the end of the Nov. 17 meeting.

Members should pay their NHS dues by Friday, November 21. Your $10 dues can be paid to Ms. King in room 126 before or after school. Dues can be paid in cash, money orders or certified checks -- FVHS does not accept personal checks.
- October 17: Induction Reminders
All students invited to join NHS are reminded that their acceptance letters are due on Friday, October 18 to Ms. King (rm. 126) or Ms. Everett (rm. 807). Please remember that if we don't get your letter we'll assume you are declining the invitation.
The NHS induction is Tuesday, October 21. Practice is at 5:30 p.m. in the gym. Be on time and we can get out of there quickly!
Please arrive (dressed appropriately!) by 6:45 p.m. for the ceremony. Remember that we'll have a reception in the gym lobby afterwards.
NHS dues of $10.00 are due within 30 days of the induction ceremony. Please see Ms. King in room 126 to pay your dues via cash, money order, or certified check. FVHS does not accept personal checks.
- October 7: Invitations to Join NHS!
Applicants will be notified of their membership status via letters mailed later this week to their homes.
If you applied and do not receive your letter by Tuesday, October 14, please see Ms. King in room 126.
Important: Students offered membership must complete and return the acceptance sheet to Ms. King in room 126 no later than Friday, October 18 in order to confirm their membership.

- September 21: Next Steps for NHS Candidates
September 18 was the final deadline for submission of NHS applications. The materials will be reviewed by the FVHS NHS Faculty Council to determine the students who will be offered membership. It is important to note that students are not compared to each other but rather to the standard for membership. Any student who meets the standard will be offered membership -- there is no minimum or maximum number of people who can be a part of the NHS.
The decision of the Faculty Council will be announced on or before October 14.
The induction ceremony for new members is October 21. Inductees must arrive at 5:30 p.m. for practice. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

- August 31: Change in Induction Ceremony
Important: Due to a conflict with basketball tryouts, the date of the induction ceremony has been changed to Tuesday, October 21. All other information (times and location) remain the same.

Completed applications are due by 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 18. Late applications will not be accepted. - August 25: NHS Candidacy Letters
Juniors and seniors with a minimum 3.75 weighted GPA will receive information about applying for membership in the National Honor Society this week during Advisory. Please see Ms. King in room 126 before or after school no later than Tuesday, September 2 if you believe you are eligible and do not receive your letter by Wednesday, August 27.
