Farewell to a "Fur"ry Friend

A tree felled by a chainsaw is no more

On Tuesday, December 11, 2007 an old, tall evergreen was taken down. It was a dying yet resilient tree. It was estimated at about 43 years old by my count of the rings. It did have its share of problems. The branches were dead over halfway up the tree. So, its time came and a guy wielding a chainsaw and wearing spikes on his shoes shinnied up the trunk of the pine and quickly tore it limb-for-limb until it was reduced to no more than a pile of debris. Now, it has been hauled off and nothing but memories, pictures, and a stump remain. So, I have made this website to show the pine's last day. I hope to replant another pine in the yard.

This is a before shot showing the pine on the left side of the driveway.

This shows the pine's prime placement in the yard.

These images show the guy climbing the tree with his tools on his belt (like Mr. McBeevee for any Andy Griffith fans). At the highest point that he climbed to, I'd estimate he was up about 35-50 feet off the ground. The tree was swaying in the wind and he was at its mercy.

This shows the house after the tree was removed. It is much more open now.

These two images show the new view from our living room window (top) and carport/driveway (bottom). It will take some getting used to.

The stump and the rings are pretty impressive. As I mentioned earlier, I counted the best i could and approximate the age of the tree in the early 40s. There are spots where the rings are really bunched, so it was hard to be sure I counted correctly.

Well, that is the story of the pine tree being removed.
