What is New Visions Health Sciences?

New Visions Health Sciences is a challenging senior-year option for students who are interested in working in the health and medical field.
  • We are located at Cayuga Medical Center.
  • Students combine 12th grade academic studies with hands-on "rotations" at the hospital and area medical offices, where they participate directly in all aspects of patient care and treatment.
  • Rotations include all departments of Cayuga Medical Center, as well as Convenient Care Center, Surgicare, and many local physicians’ offices and community health agencies.
  • Rotation opportunities include oncology, surgery, radiology, intensive & cardiac care, nutrition, rehabilitation therapy, maternity, pediatrics, and many more.
  • Cayuga Medical Center provides convenient classroom space, parking, and access to the hospital cafeteria.

Rotations: Learning by Doing

Progressing through rotations, students observe and directly participate in departments such as Same Day Surgery, Bangs Ambulance, Emergency Department, Security, Medical Rehabilitation, Maternity and Pediatrics, Nuclear Medicine, Intensive Care, Pharmacy, Dialysis and many more.Every week, students fulfill learning objectives, keep clinical journals, write up patient case studies, and research new developments in that department's area of medical care.

A Dynamic, Relevant, Integrated Course of Study

  • You'll never ask, "Why are we learning this?" In New Visions, everything we study is directly connected to our areas of interest.
  • Reading choices are carefully selected to relate to the health & medicine, government and economics focus of the curriculum.

  • In class, we have really interesting discussions! Because class size is small, students receive a lot of individual attention. It's an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable participating.
  • Students take turns leading seminars and we have a good mix of independent projects and paired and group work.
  • We have a comprehensive class web page with online discussion boards, chat areas, RSS feeds to medical current events, resources for homework and research, and an online grade book.
  • The work load is substantial, but you will learn to read and write at a college level and you'll learn how to manage your time effectively.
