● 1820 -- Merchants at Four Corners began Tiverton Library Services at the Seabury Store. It is the second oldest public library in Newport County. Over the next hundred years library services expanded to all of Tiverton's villages, and then consolidated to be more cost effective.
● May 1939 – Corner stone placed for Essex as soon as ground was dry from the hurricane. ● Late 20th century -- services were coordinated from Essex through the two surviving buildings: Essex and Union. ● 1987 -- a Building Committee was formed to seek a site for a new building. ● 2002 -- the Committee was restarted, pushed by the fact that the library buildings were noncompliant in several areas, and out of waivers for exceptions to Standards. Several sites were offered, but were tied to retail development and did not materialize. ● 2005 -- Elizabeth Mainiero of Cupolo Consulting created building program. ● September 2007 -- a Purchase and Sales agreement was signed for a building site at the geographic center of Town. ● December 2007 -- Tiverton's future library received national attention when it was chosen to be the focus at a session of the Library Journal's Design Institute: Going Green, held in Chicago. ● February 2008 – Fundraising began. ● August 2008 – Administrative subdivision of Citizen's Union Bank land was approved by Planning Board. ● August 2008 – Newport County Grant received from RI Foundation for a feasibility study of a prototype green library in Tiverton and for locating additional funding sources. ● October 2008 – Strategic Planning Grant received from the RI Foundation to support preconstruction planning for a new library that will include site prep, engineering, design and capital campaign planning related to the development of a LEED model library. ● October 2008 -- Kathy Ryan, President of Friends of Tiverton Libraries presents "Leading by Example: Toward More Sustainable Communities" at NELA Conference in Manchester, NH. ● November 2008 – Site Closing using Endowment Funds. ● December 2008 – Four Corners Merchants host First Fundraiser for a New Building. ● February 2009 – Town Council Workshop Final Report on Newport County Grant ● February 2009 - "Green Construction for a New Library in Tiverton: A Study of Options, Benefits, and Costs". Conclusions and graphics from the 4 month preliminary planning study by Robinson Green Beretta Architects presented at Community Center.
● April 2009 - The team of architects, engineers, sustainability, code and cost consultants led by Donald Powers Architects, Inc was selected to review the Building Program from 2005, develop concept designs/models, provide a project cost estimate, through funding for Strategic Planning awarded by the Rhode Island Foundation.
● May 2009 - The Donald Powers and Douglas Kalfeltz of DPA, provided an overview the project with time for comments and questions, at the monthly meeting of the Library Trustees. Town Officials and the public were invited.
● June-August 2009 - Donald Powers Architects in conjunction with Mr. Jay Lucker (Library design and programming consultant) met with the staff of the Library to update the comprehensive library program that was originally completed in early 2005.
