Sec. Maureen Hocking

The primary role of the U3A is to provide opportunities for learning for semi-retired and retired people over 50, either to gain new knowledge and insights or to expand on what they already have.  In so doing, new interests, entertainment and companionship are enjoyed and members are encouraged to contribute themselves by offering their own skills and knowledge to fellow members.

The organisation is a self-help one and in Newquay the leaders come from within the group so that costs are kept to a minimum.  Our present membership has now grown to over 150, with between 70/80 attending the monthly meetings on a regular basis.

Please note that from February 14th, the new venue for our monthly meeting will be the Sandy Lodge Hotel, from 10.15am, when you can enjoy a cup of tea/coffee for just £1 and chat to fellow members before the meeting starts at 11am.

We currently have over 25 smaller interest groups, which meet as required in a wide variety of venues or each others homes and are entirely voluntary.  New groups can be set up at any time by two or three members having a common interest.

U3A is international and the UK national office based in Bromley issues a periodic magazine and also has a wide and ever increasing range of learning aids to buy or borrow.  Much of this material is from the Open University and is very well presented.
