The New Orleans Hot Shots Jazz Band

THE NEW ORLEANS HOTSHOTS JAZZ BAND play their own
unique brand of traditional jazz. Although inspired by a wide variety
of bands from the Classic 1920's period up to the 40's and 50's
revival; they base many arrangements on the original sounds of
Armstrong, Morton, Oliver and Piron. The Hotshots descended from
Leicester's own Russ Merryfield Jazz Band, resident at the Town Arms in Leicester
for more than 20 years. Russ is no longer with the Hotshots, but their
leader, trombonist - Dave Harmer and pianist - Chris Riley go right back to
Russ's original 1972 band. Trumpet player - Bev Luton and Reeds Player - John Hale both originate from the Mardi Gras Jazz Band of Daventry and join the band with a wealth of experience mainly with New Orleans Jazz of a later date flavour. This has added some of the more unusual Bayou, Spanish and Latin influences in tunes common with earlier times in New Orleans' Dance Halls. Our bassist, Al Harris replaces our long standing friend, Alan Offiler who died in 2005. Drummer Keith Chaplin (also a recent addition to the Band) adds a strong drive to the rhythm section. Vocal renditions are given by all the front line musicians - some better than others! Terry Fyffe (Cornet and Ex-Leader) and Clive Bott (Drums) were both highly featured in the Band until recently, they have both since retired.
