Thanks Mike.

4) Upcoming Meets

Low Gillerthwait Field Centre, West Lakes 20 to 22nd April:                 Ballot  12th April

This meet is in response to a number of requests over the last few years for a meet in the western lake district. The Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre is in the Ennerdale valley, so provides easy access to Loweswater and Buttermere as well as Wasdale and Eskdale. Directions can be found at http://www.lgfc.org.uk/Contacts-Directions.htm. Post code CA23 3AX - Grid ref. NY139141.

Climbing opportunities include Pillar in Ennerdale itself, and numerous places, high and low, in Wasdale and Eskdale. Gable and Scafell are the two main mountain crag areas. The centre has a large kitchen, and sleeps up to 40, so there may well be other groups in as well as us, although we will have two of the dormitories to ourselves. You get a waterproof matress and a pilllow, but you need to bring your own sleeping bag. Further details of the facilities can be found at http://www.lgfc.org.uk/About-Premises.htm.

At present we have 18 places, but may be able to extend the booking if we are over-subscribed. The cost will be £14 per night.

Inverie Hostel, Knoydart   Fri 4th to Mon 7th May:       10  places still available

This is a 3-night meet, and you will need to take both Friday and Monday off if you intend to use the normal sailings operated by Bruce Watt Cruises. We will look in to charters at other times if there is enough demand. Ros will do this when she gets back from France, w/c 16th April.

The hostel in Inverie has been reserved for the Friday, saturday and Sunday nights - there are boats on Friday and Monday from Mallaig but not Saturday and Sunday. The bunkhouse details are given at http://www.knoydart-foundation.com/visit-us/foundation-bunkhouse/. It has bunks and mattresses but you need to bring a sleeping bag. There is a small shop in Inverie for the odd small item, but we need to take food in on the boat. There are supermarkets in Mallaig. It's a good idea to arrange small groups for cooking beforehand as you need to plan it! Inverie also has a pub - the remotest inn in the country. It does good food and good beer, but it's not cheap!

There are 25 places on this trip, and we need to fill all of them to recoup the costs, which will be set at £14 per night. Priority is given to those who wish to attend for all three nights up to 2230 on Thursday 26th April. thereafter you can join the meet for a smaller number of nights if places remain.

5) Journal 2011

More articles are required for the 2011 Club Journal; Walter would like to publish at the end of April so get your skates on!!!

posted 5 Mar 2012 01:30 by Jacobites MC   [ updated 29 Mar 2012 15:17 ]

Its been a slow month February, so I apologise for the tardiness in the production the March Newsletter.  Oh look, there's some tumbleweed just blowing past my window ….. I've had this horrible thing called “work” getting in the way too.  Hmmmm.  Also, where did Winter go?  Answers on a Postcard please.

This month, in your Jacobites Newsletter, we have, for your delectation:

1. Meets in February 2012
2. Thursday Night Mini Lectures in March 2012
3. Whisky Tasting at Inver
4. Club Journal 2011
5. Discount at Cotswold Outdoors
6. “Duck-Off”
7. And Finally ….

1. Meets in February  2012

We have 2 meets in March, however:

A. Glen Affric Chalet Park, Cannich - 9 to 11 March 2012
B. Kintail Outdoor Centre, Glen Shiel - 23 to 25 March 2012

I also think it worth mentioning the first meet in April too, as it coincides quite deliberately with the first Public Holidays of the year, Easter

C. Easter Meet at Inver Croft - 6 to 9 April 2012

Finally in this section a reminder of when Ballots are scheduled.

Ballots as required in March are scheduled thus:

A. Glen Affric Chalet Park, Cannich – Last Thursday; get in your Tardis for that one then!
B. Kintail Outdoor Centre, Glen Shiel – 15th March

Also note that the Ballot for the Knoydart meet (in May) will take place on 29th March!

2. Thursday Night Mini Lectures in January

We have 2 talks this month, with the proceeds going to the Torridon and Achnasheen MRT.

8th March, John Hesketh, “Tien Shan and the Pamirs - Hiking in Central Asia”

If you want to contribute, please let Walter now, email: journal@jacobitesmc.co.uk

4. Whisky Tasting at Inver

“Our Beloved Leader” Mike Snook, has organised an evening of Whisky tasting at Inver Croft for the weekend of 16th-18th March.  It will cost you £20 each for this assault on your taste buds, which has the the theme of "Single Malts from The Islands"; also included is a 3 course meal, presumable cooked by Mike himself.  For the uninitiated, Mike is a dab hand in the kitchen, and a meal cooked by him is not to be missed!

See Mike for any spare tickets ASAP!

5. Discount at Cotswold Camping

A quick reminder that you can use that code I sent out last month to obtain a 15% discount off full kit price at Cotswold Camping, both in Shop and Online.  I was going to send you a reminder of the code, but I thought I'd send you  reminder of the offer instead, as we don't want the code on the website now, do we?!?!  Come and see me or any committee member if you've forgotten to that vital code.

6. “Duck-Off”

Ali Callum has decided to go into business cleaning Down Jackets, and is trading under the name of “Duck-Off”.  There is a “Duck-Off Deal” this spring for club members, entitled the “Jacobite Spring Chicken introductory offer”: £25 (per item?).  Ali says there are no postage costs, and Jackets can be dropped off at the pub on a Thursday evening (and presumably collected from there too?)

If you want to take advantage of this offer, Ali can be contacted at:
ali@littlblacksuit.com
07810 696957
0131 660 6665

7. And Finally …..

This month's Jacobites MC Album of the Month, is “Metal Fatigue” the seminal album by the guitarist, Allan Holdsworth.  Apparently, this man is a genius on the guitar, and to my shame, I have never heard any of his stuff.  So if somebody has this album on CD I'd be extremely obliged if I could borrow it from you.  Many thanks!

STOP PRESS!!! - Thursday 9th February - Talk POSTPONED

posted 6 Feb 2012 03:29 by Jacobites MC

Oh Dear, General Jones has had to postpone his upcoming talk this Thursday, due to work commitments (yes, he's finally had to do some, so its obviously a massive shock to his delicate system).

This is undoubtedly a massive disappointment to the whole club: I myself was looking forward to a fine evening of shameless self-publicity - as you'd all appreciate from the convivial nature of the General's character, this would have been the highlight of the Thursday evening talks series this year.  Boo hoo!

Watch this space for a re-scheduled "General Jones Show"!

STOP PRESS!!! - Thursday 16th February, Evening Talk

posted 2 Feb 2012 02:06 by Jacobites MC

Of course, I forgot to mention possibly the most exciting Thursday evening talk in February (in my opinion, and 'cause I forgot about it - Silly me!)

Jeff Frew, "Attitude at Altitude" with proceeds to Community Action Nepal (CAN)

Jeff Frew is a director of Community Action Treks, and a trustee of Community Action Nepal (CAN). CAN was originally set up by Doug Scott, who I think you've probably heard of! http://canepal.org.uk/pages/about-can.php

CAN is a charity that supports Nepalese mountain communities, in the shape of schools and health posts, for example. Remember, these communities provide the sherpas, upon whose backs all the top Himalayan mountaineers secure their fame and fortune. Without the Sherpas, there would be no Himalayan mountaineering – Fact!

So come along and support a worthy cause, and hear an excellent talk about the highest mountains in the world!

February 2012 Newsletter

posted 1 Feb 2012 04:43 by Jacobites MC

This month, in your Jacobites Newsletter, we have for your delectation:

1. Meets in February 2012
2. Thursday Night Mini Lectures in February 2012
3. Club Journal 2011
4. An Offer of Coaching at Glasgow TCA
5. “Wind Farm” Planning Application near Inver
6. Google Group
7. Newsletter Feedback
8. And Finally ….

I'm sure there is something I've missed here, but do keep an eye on the Website, as I tend to post LATE News items there, unsurprisingly under “News”

1. Meets in February  2012

We have 3 meets in February, however:

A. Muir Cottage, Inverey – 10th to 12th February 2012
B.1. Mill Cottage, Feshiebridge – 24th to 26th February 2012
B.2. CIC Hut, Ben Nevis - 24th to 26th February 2012

The CIC Hut meet is managed slightly differently to other meets: potential attendees are balloted in pairs, as attendees are usually climbers and climbing in pairs is the norm.
Also, keep in touch with the Meets Secretaries about this meet, as the CIC Hut was damaged in January this year due to high winds.  Repairs have been affected, I'm lead to believe, but you never know what the precise, current situation will be with the hut.

Finally in this section a reminder of when Ballots are scheduled.

Ballots as required in January are scheduled thus:

A. Muir Cottage, Inverey – 2nd February 2012
B.1. Mill Cottage, Feshiebridge – 16th February 2012
B.2. CIC Hut, Ben Nevis – 16th February 2012

And advance warning of the first Ballot in March:

Glen Affric Chalet Park, Cannich – 1st March

2. Thursday Night Mini Lectures in January

We have 2 talks this month, with the proceeds going to the Torridon and Achnasheen MRT.

9th February: Ian Jones, “The General Jones Show
23rd February: Tim Kearsey, “Why are Mountains there?  How our understanding of how mountains form has changed through time

All talks are in the Cumberland 8pm for an 8:30pm start.

3. Another Call for Contributions to the 2011 Journal

Walter Robison will be compiling the 2011 club Journal for issue in spring next year; and he would like to hear from anyone would like to contribute articles, stories, pictures, anecdotes, or anything else!

If you want to contribute, please let Walter now, email: journal@jacobitesmc.co.uk

4. An Offer of Coaching at Glasgow TCA

An offer to coaching at a special rate for a group of club members is available at the recently opened The Climbing Academy (TCA), Glasgow.  Many thanks to Tim Clarke for identifying this opportunity for club members.

For a group of 5 minimum to 10 maximum people, ideally 8 at £15 each, you'd get:
- 'life' membership (£10 normally)
- Entry (£8 normally)
- Hire of rock shoes
- 1 hr 15mins instruction
- As long as you like to climb thereafter that day

Rob from TCA says: “As you can see, this is a good deal for non climbers and would suit many of the walkers who may like to try bouldering but may be intimidated …. by Alien Rock. It is also a good deal for a first visit for the climbers.”

Expert climbers in the club have visited TCA Glasgow already, and were impressed with the number and quality of route settings, as well as the good lighting, cafeteria, and general ambience. The staff and Rob in particular are friendly and helpful.  People can go online to their WEBSITE to check it out.  Easy access from the M8 makes it worth a day trip from Edinburgh during these winter months.

Get in touch with the President ( president@jacobitesmc.co.uk ), or any other committee member, and we'll see if we can drum up the numbers to take advantage of this offer.

5. A Wind Turbine Planning Application near Inver

There has been a planning application to build a Wind Turbine near Inver, our club hut.  Details can be found HERE:

The turbine would be about 3Km further along the road from the Inver layby, near to an existing mast at roughly Grid Ref. NH123545 (if I've read the documentation correctly – it wasn't that clear).  According to the Photo montage documents, the turbine would be clearly visible on the horizon to the west, as seen from the layby we all park in.  I have no idea about the visibility from Inver itself – you will have to examine the documents yourself and come to your own view on the matter, I do not want to speculate further!

The Club has no official position on this proposal at present, however if views from the membership are strong and sufficient in number, a club view might be expressed to the relevant body.  However, this does not of course, prevent you from expressing your opinion individually.  What we do know at the moment is that a group of local people are objecting to the proposal, according to the Loch Ewe Visitor Centre.

If you have an opinion, please express these to Mike, the Club President ( president@jacobitesmc.co.uk ).

6. Google Group

Another reminder about the Club Google Group.  You can contribute to documents posted on the website for each Club Meet.  Simply follow the instructions to join the Group on the Website HERE:

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH with me ASAP if you are having problems accessing the group and the documents – its really very simple, and I'm more than willing to help you, by email, phone, or even to show you face-to-face (at Alien on Tuesday evening for example, as well as at the Pub – must there go sometime soon!).

7. Newsletter Feedback

Is there anything you want me to advertise in the Newsletter?  Is there anything you want on the Website?  If so, get in touch with me – newsletter@jacobitesmc.co.uk

The next deadline is 30th February 2012.

8. And Finally …..

This month's Jacobites MC Album of the Month, is “Anna Calvi” the debut album by Anna Calvi (unsurprisingly, I'd guess!).  Modern atmospheric pop music, with a novel slant on the electric guitar.  I've not listened to this much, but I think it could be a “grower”!  Enjoy.
