Prize Giving / Final Race Day - 3/4 Oct 09

Newcastle Yacht Club News – “Racing Season ends with Annual Prize-Giving Dinner”

Saturday was not a day for sailing thanks to the westerly gales which the forecasters correctly predicted. Sailing was postponed until Sunday for the last race of the season but the Prize-giving Dinner went ahead on Saturday night as planned.

Festivities kicked off at 8.00 in the Clubhouse with the company sitting down to a superb meal, with catering by New Era, Newcastle.
After dinner the Commodore, Frank Campbell, presented the prizes for the various race series and class championships held throughout the season. The usual suspects featured, but some of the younger members have shown a huge amount of promise this year. Best Senior Award went to Clive Coffey and Best Junior to Rory Shevlin.
Once all the racing trophies were presented it was down to the serious business of the Ladies’ Prize and the Commodore’s Prize. The Ladies’ Prize, given to the Club by ex-commodore Leslie Mackie, was presented to Nina Coffey for her contributions to the club on the water as an active sailor but also for her hard work behind the scenes supporting club events, while the Commodore’s Prize went to Simon McIlwaine whose photography skills provide all those super pictures that regularly appear in the Mourne Observer. He has also been hard at work, along with Gerry Lennon, creating the Club’s new website and keeping it up to date. The rest of the night was danced away to music by the band “Aftershock ”. .

Sunday was the last day’s racing of the season and ten boats were on the water with their crews, bright eyed and bushy tailed, to enjoy a day of sunshine and variable Westerly winds which had thankfully dropped to a more manageable Force Three. However there were gusts, veering winds and spells of calm to contend with which made for both interesting and testing sailing conditions.
Race One saw close sailing between a leading bunch of Lasers, 470 and Seaflys trying to outmanoeuvre each other and steal each other’s wind until finally splitting up at the East mark. Marc and Frank in the single handed Lasers were in close contention right to the line, Marc taking first and Frank second. Sam and Gerry in the 470 were next across the line but Alan and Paddy in the Seafly, working away quietly in the background, were on their heels and took third on handicap.
In Race Two Derek joined the field to sail his Scorpion singlehanded and again positions were closely contended at the front of the field throughout the first lap. Again the Lasers were to the fore along with the 470 but Derek soon made his mark and pulled ahead. The winds were flukier this race requiring frequent course changes to compensate for the changing wind direction and strength due to an approaching band of rain. Derek held his lead to take first with Marc and Frank in the Lasers second and third respectively. The rain came down as the crews finally came ashore.
