Newcastle Bushwalking Club - Walks Programme October-November-December-2009 PLEASE NOTE: Participants must contact the leader at least 2-days beforehand to confirm meeting arrangements and book a place. Some of our activities are intended to be more challenging than a picnic and require a minimum level of fitness and bush experience. In the interests of safety the leader may inquire about your equipment, fitness and experience before accepting your participation. Please do not bring friends on a walk unless you have discussed this matter with the leader beforehand and can verify their ability. Some trips may not be suitable for beginners. Non-members are required to pay a $5 temporary membership fee. All participants do so as volunteers, accepting responsibility for any risks and must sign a waiver acknowledging the risks that may be associated with an activity. Sunday 11 October DAY WALK –+++ Dharug National Park Mill Creek Circuit 11km, a magnificent walk for all, up Mill Creek, over a saddle, down into a rugged valley, up along an escarpment with great views and down and around arriving back at the beginning 5 hours later. Sunday 18 October DAY WALK - The Sandy tributaries of the McDonald River are often called the Highway of sand, this walk will follow the ridge system into Howes Valley Creek and then along sandy highway of the McDonald river to the Putty Road. The trip provides a good opportunity for new members to to develop navigation skills. Leader Trevor Henderson Grade M: M/R: 300.

Our guest speaker is ROBERT JENKINS Safety and Training Manager for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. He will give a presentation about the work of the service and things you should know if you need to be rescued. A gold coin donation appreciated

Car Camp and Day Walks +++ - Towarri National Park ; sandstone outcrops and scenic outlooks feature in a rugged landscape harbouring rainforests, snow gums and large grass tree stands. Activities: The Washpools picnic and camping area There are no defined paths in the park at this stage, but steep hills and spectacular summit views offer a rewarding challenge for experienced bushwalkers. Access: 25 km north-west of Scone via Middlebrook Road (unpaved). Leader Trevor Henderson.
Wednesday 4 November Day Walk – +++ Abbotts Falls, rainforest, gorge, waterfall. Good swimming pools, track and short creek walking, Leader Trevor Henderson , Map Morisset 1:25,000 Grade S:M/R:100. Meet 9am at Freemans Waterhole. Saturday 7 November Canoe trip - Mangrove Creek – Exploring Mangrove Creek upstream of Spencer. Leader Paul Bateman, Map Gunderman 1:25,000. Grade Flat water 20km.

Tuesday 10 November Daylight Saving Walk +++ at Bluegum Regional Park, Minmi. Meet 6 pm at the gate. Gas BBQ, toilets, tables are available. Leaders Bob and Jane Lewin.
Wednesday 11 November ½ Day Walk +++- Kahibah to Newcastle. This walk takes the route of the Great North Walk towards Newcastle. Optional lunch at the Brewery. Meet 9 am at the parking area at the Yuelarbah track head Burwood Road Kahibah.

Saturday 14 Sunday 15 November National Parks and Wildlife Service - +++ Croocked Mountain Concert Car Camp, day walks and Saturday Night Concert featuring Jon English, Jonah Road and the Harminators in Warrumbungle National Park. Sunday 15 November Day Walk +++ -An interesting section of “The Tops to Myall’s Heritage Trail’ starting from the intersection of Koolonock road and the old Pacific highway 7 km north of Bulahdelah and ending up at Korsmans Landing on Myall Lakes. Total distance 17km of easy walking with wonderful views from along The ridgeline at the back of Bulahdelah. A relaxing weekend of swimming canoeing drinking and eating at this beautiful lakeside camping area. Boat access only, water transport available. A traditional bushwalkers campfire on Saturday night (fire restrictions permitting) so bring your best singing voice and some fire wood. Sausage Sizzle will be arranged Saturday Evening (meat and basic salad provided). National Park Fees Apply. Sunday 20 December Breakfast with Birds. +++ Meet 7.30am at the Wetlands Centre Shortland for guided tour with a ornithologist who can answer everything you ever wanted to know about birds. After the tour an all-you- can-eat buffet big breakfast on the balcony. Cost $30 Numbers Limited - must be paid by 11 November to secure a place. Leader Jenny Henderson.
