Botany Walks

The Webster Groves Nature Study Society  (WGNSS) Botany Group normally schedules a field botany trip for each Monday. Occasional weekend trips may be scheduled for a weekend either by WGNSS or Missouri Native Plant Society (MONPS). If you would like to receive an email the Saturday or Sunday immediately before the Monday trip, please contact Jack Harris jahar AT mac.com and ask to be added to the distribution list. There is no expectation to reply to the email message.

Monday, March 28 9:30 AM Meet at the parking area of Emmenegger Nature Park (Possum Woods) in Kirkwood (N  38˚  32.811' W  90˚  25.974). Monday, November 15 at 9:30 AM Katy Trail State Park in St. Charles County, MO. We will meet at the  Lost Valley Trailhead, Weldon Spring Conservation Area. From St. Louis area, take 40 (64) west to 94 (exit 20). Turn left, then 5.9 miles to an access road on the right (west) of 94. Trip should take 2-3 hours. Difficulty: A stroll in the park. Bring all-weather gear, water, bug repellent etc. We may visit a restaurant afterward. Monday, August 16 at 9:30 AM Our destination is the Cuivre River State Park. Monday, August 9 at 9:00 AM Our destination is the Missouri Botanical Garden to visit the Cactus Show (indoors & air conditioned). We will meet at the Ridegeway Visitor Center. Monday, August 2 at 9:00 AM Our destination is Shaw Nature Reserve (Google map). We will meet at the Visitor Center. From St. Louis, take I-44 west to 100. Turn left on to 100, then immediately right. You'll see the entrance 0.1 mile later, on right. Terrain is moderately rolling. Bring all-weather gear, water, bug repellent etc. Duration: 2-3 hours. Monday, July 26 at 9:00 AM Our destination is Weldon Spring Environmental Site (google map). We will meet at the Interpretive Center parking area. From St. Louis County, take 40 (I-64)/ 15 miles west of 270 is Highway 94, St. Charles Co. Exit on 94, go west 1.7 miles to Interpretive Center Drive, just west of large white MODOT quonset hut. Monday, July 19 at 9:00 AM Our destination is Creve Coeur Park. We will meet at the west park entrance, off Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Travel west on Dorsett from 270, then travel west for 1.5 miles to Marine Ave. Turn right on Marine, then 1.5 miles to the Maryland Heights Expressway. Turn left on the Expressway, travel 1.4 miles to River Valley Dr. Turn left (east) on River Valley for 0.3 miles to Creve Coeur Mill Rd. Turn left to enter the park. We will meet on the east side of the parking area, nearest the lake. County Parks are planning to remove invasive exotics & plant native species in the upland forest. Duration: 2-3 hours. Difficulty: mostly level. We may visit a restaurant afterward. Monday, July 5 at 9:00 AM Our destination is Creve Coeur Park. We will meet at the gravel parking area on Street Car Drive. Travel west on Dorsett from 270, then turn right on Street Car. Go 0.6 mi. past Park Office to the gravel parking area on the right. Here's a map of the parkBring all-weather gear, water, bug repellent etc. This will be the first visit to assist in a plant survey of a part of the park. St. Louis Audubon & St. L. County Parks are planning to remove invasive exotics & plant native species in the upland forest. Duration: 2-3 hours. Difficulty: moderate. We may visit a restaurant afterward. Monday, June 28 at 9:00 AM Our destination is Governor Bates Trail at Faust County Park. We will meet at the trailhead parking area. Immediately after entering the park, keep to the right and continue north/east through the Butterfly House parking area (about 0.2 mile). Continue north on the park road out of the parking area, keeping to the left, for about 0.4 mile to the last parking area. Sign for Gov. Bates Trail is at the north end of this parking area. Monday, June 21 at 9:00 AM We will meet at the Augusta trailhead of the Katy Trail in St. Charles County, MO. From St. Louis area, take 40 (64) west to 94 (exit 20). Turn left, then 16 miles to a left turn on Church Street. Travel south 0.4 miles to Hackman Rd. Turn right (west) on Hackman, then jog left onto Locust. Travel west on Locust to Public Street.
