The workers launched their strike on Jan 14, 2002, the immediate issue being Nestle's unilateral decision to drop the issue of retirement benefits from the collective bargaining process. This was a cold and calculated decision bound up with the implementation by the company of its global competitive strategy to dismantle its permanent, unionized workforce and the labor standards and protections its workers have built up through class struggle.
