Volunteer Coordinator: Ashley Lawson at ashley@miriamskitchen.org Website: http://www.miriamskitchen.org/howtohelp/htv.html Miriam’s Kitchen Since 1983, Miriam’s Kitchen has served homeless individuals in DC by serving breakfast every weekday, including holidays and even in poor weather conditions. After breakfast, Miriam’s Kitchen runs therapeutic groups including painting, poetry, creative writing, literary discussion groups, psychiatric support groups, and yoga. Miriam’s Kitchen also provides case management services to its guests and maintains a transitional housing program called Arnold’s Place. Volunteer Opportunities Miriam's has over 1,500 amazing volunteers including individuals, monthly volunteer groups, and one-time volunteer groups. Volunteers cook and serve breakfast to nearly 200 homeless men and women on weekday mornings, sort food at the Capital Area Food Bank, and help with special projects. In 2005, volunteers put in over 12,500 hours of time for Miriam's Kitchen--the equivalent six full-time staff! On-going volunteers for Miriam's come as individuals and in groups from businesses, churches, universities and organizations in DC, Virginia and Maryland. Miriam's also hosts special volunteer groups traveling from Iowa, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, Delaware, Texas and as far away as Japan. Breakfast Program:
Miriam's Cafe: Volunteers are needed to serve as baristas for our clients at Miriam's Cafe. This program provides lunch from 11:30am to 1:30pm everyday Wednesday. Day/Time: Wednesdays from 11:30am-1:30pm. After-Breakfast Program/Creative Classes: After Breakfast Groups: 8:15-9:45 every weekday Monday - Art, Writing, and Haircuts Tuesday - Art, Miriam's Dialogue, Geography, and Haircuts Wednesday - Art, Poetry, and Sewing/Crafts Thursday - Art, Writing, and Haircuts Friday - Art, Card Making, Writing, and Haircuts Since 1994, Miriam’s Kitchen has offered After-Breakfast therapeutic workshops. Every Wednesday since 1994 a group of poets meets to read, discuss, and write poetry. Throughout the years Miriam’s has added groups to the After-Breakfast Program such as additional writing groups, a daily visual arts workshop, a geography group, and a George Washington University student-led discussion group. An average of 100 Miriam’s guests per month currently attend. During these unique workshops, our Case Management staff and volunteers are able to spend more time with participants and develop trusting relationships with our guests. Volunteers are needed for guiding/facilitating creative arts projects and classes with clients. Project ideas include creative writing, poetry, knitting, yoga, resume writing, nutrition, and classes on all subjects. Volunteers would be responsible for preparing the topics and instructing participants. Groups of participants would likely be small (7-10). Day/ Time: The program is Monday through Friday from 8:00am-9:45am. Items can be delivered Monday through Friday from 6:00am
