Miriam’s Kitchen

Since 1983, Miriam’s Kitchen has served homeless individuals in DC by serving breakfast every weekday, including holidays and even in poor weather conditions.  After breakfast, Miriam’s Kitchen runs therapeutic groups including painting, poetry, creative writing, literary discussion groups, psychiatric support groups, and yoga.  Miriam’s Kitchen also provides case management services to its guests and maintains a transitional housing program called Arnold’s Place.

Volunteer Opportunities

Miriam's has over 1,500 amazing volunteers including individuals, monthly volunteer groups, and one-time volunteer groups. Volunteers cook and serve breakfast to nearly 200 homeless men and women on weekday mornings, sort food at the Capital Area Food Bank, and help with special projects. In 2005, volunteers put in over 12,500 hours of time for Miriam's Kitchen--the equivalent six full-time staff!

On-going volunteers for Miriam's come as individuals and in groups from businesses, churches, universities and organizations in DC, Virginia and Maryland. Miriam's also hosts special volunteer groups traveling from Iowa, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, Delaware, Texas and as far away as Japan.

Here are the ways you can help us:

Breakfast Program:

  • Helping to cook and serve breakfast one morning a month from 6:00am-8:30am, Monday-Friday. Individuals and groups are welcome. Occasionally, around holidays and for special events, we also use volunteers later in the morning to prep food. Before becoming a breakfast volunteer we ask that you fill out a volunteer application, return it to Ashley Lawson, and attend a volunteer orientation.
  • If you are interested in volunteering, please click here to download the Volunteer Application Form, and return it to: Ashley Lawson, Miriam's Kitchen, 2401 Virginia Avenue NW, Washington DC, 20037 or fax number 202-835-8376.
  • Orientations are held on the second Tuesday of each month.  If you would like to attend please RSVP to Ashley Lawson at ashley@miriamskitchen.org.
  • Children under the age of 16 are not allowed to volunteer.

Since 1994, Miriam’s Kitchen has offered After-Breakfast therapeutic workshops. Every Wednesday since 1994 a group of poets meets to read, discuss, and write poetry. Throughout the years Miriam’s has added groups to the After-Breakfast Program such as additional writing groups, a daily visual arts workshop, a geography group, and a George Washington University student-led discussion group. An average of 100 Miriam’s guests per month currently attend. During these unique workshops, our Case Management staff and volunteers are able to spend more time with participants and develop trusting relationships with our guests.

Volunteers are needed for guiding/facilitating creative arts projects and classes with clients.  Project ideas include creative writing, poetry, knitting, yoga, resume writing, nutrition, and classes on all subjects.  Volunteers would be responsible for preparing the topics and instructing participants.  Groups of participants would likely be small (7-10).
