Let's begin by reading below to learn how the Modular Blended Learning Program fits into the vision and goals of the NC Virtual Public School. NCVPS Vision and Goals Now that we see how this program fits into the vision and goals of the NC Virtual Public School, let's learn more about the program itself. Take a few minutes to read the introduction below and work through the presentation below to learn more about the foundation of the Modular Blended Learning Program.IntroductionWhat is the NCVPS Modular Blended Learning Program? The NCVPS Modular Blended Learning Program offers just in time remediation for students struggling with mastering concepts in a current course. Because the online environments allows the students to work through the content at their own pace at any time, students are able to stay on pace with their peers in the classroom and not fall further behind. The Modular Program offers face to face teachers alternative learning environments for students that may need a differentiated learning path. The students will also have the added benefit of working with two teachers - the face to face teacher and the online teacher. To learn more about the program, please view the Flypaper presentation below. Modular Blended Learning PresentationPlease work your way through each chapter to learn about the foundation and the processes of the NCVPS Modular Blended Learning Program. Now that we've explored the foundation of the program, click on the links below to learn more about the modules offered this semester. ModulesYou may click on the link or the picture below to learn more about the modules offered this semester. What modules are available at this time? There are several modules from Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology, Digital Communications, English, and Physical Science available at this time. Please view the Module Descriptions by clicking on the image to the left or this link. You will find a brief description of the module, the objectives covered, and the websites used throughout the module. Would you like to explore the modules? Guest access is now available for the Fall 2010 modules. Go to http://ncvps.blackboard.com and click on User Login. The username is modular.guest and the password is pass4guest. You will see a listing of all the available modules on the right hand side of the page under My Courses. Click on a course and explore! Now that you see the modules you may want to explore with your students this semester, let's talk about how to enroll the students in the registration system. RegistrationThe process for enrolling a student in the modular program is very similar to the process for enrolling a student in a traditional NCVPS course. The biggest difference is the distance learning advisor (DLA) at your school can enroll the students through the NCVPS registration system throughout the semester. Take a look at the slide below to find out the dates the registration will open and the way the modules will be "named" in the system. Please provide your DLA with this information. In return, the DLA will need to provide you with the username and password for the students as well as the online instructor name. We have also provided some registration materials/links below in case the DLA at your school is new to NCVPS.DLAs can log into the registration system to enroll students, using the following link: Registration System Login DLAs can view the registration system manual here: Registration System Manual DLAs can view registration videos here: Registration System Videos Now that you have the information for enrolling in the modules, let's talk about how you might implement the program into your classroom. ImplementationLet's explore how this works in the classroom. You've identified students that need a little extra assistance with objectives that are offered in a NCVPS modular format. What now? The first decision that needs to be made is when and where the student will work on the module. This will vary depending on your school and your classroom setup. Let's explore three different options that we see as possibilities. Click the play button to watch the video below. Now that we've explored three different options for where the student can complete the module, let's discuss the face to face teachers responsibilities versus the online teachers responsibilities. The program is designed to be a resource both for the student and the teacher and should not be a heavy burden on the face to face teachers. Let's see how this might work. Click the play button to watch the video below. Now that we've reviewed the teacher responsibilities, let's discuss the concerns or questions you may still have about implementing this program in your classroom. Click here to go to a wiki page to discuss any questions or concerns you have with implementing the program at this time. Be sure to include your name and school with your comments so that we can follow up with your concerns. After you have added to the wiki discussion, move below to learn some Blackboard basics that you help you assist your students getting started. Blackboard BasicsNow that we've discussed implementing the program with your students, let's look at what your students should do once they log into Blackboard. The video below walks you through what your students should do on a daily basis when working through the modules. Click play to watch the video. Now that you have watched the video, what other questions do you have about Blackboard. Post a sticky note on the wallwisher below to share your questions. Be sure to add your name to the sticky note so that we can follow up with you. If you're interested in learning some Blackboard basics you can access the student orientation and view the "Lessons" which cover some basic Blackboard actions you're students will need to know. Please note this information is also in the Getting Started Unit in every module. Click on the this link to learn how to access the Student Orientation. Now that we've reviewed some Blackboard Basics, let's move on to learn about how the face to face teacher and the students can communicate with the online instructor. CommunicationCommunication is vital to making this program a success. Click play to listen to why we feel communication between the face to face teacher and the online teacher is crucial to student success!
Now that we've discussed how important it is for the teachers to communicate with each other either by phone, email, or instant messaging, let's focus on the ways in which the student can communicate with the online instructor. Students can also use the messaging system in Blackboard (discussed n in the Blackboard Basics video above) to communicate with the online instructor but there is also a synchronous communication option for students and teachers called Wimba Pronto. Students enrolled in the course, can create a Wimba Pronto account and download Pronto to the computer so that real time communication can occur with the teacher. Watch the video below to find where the student can access the Wimba Pronto link and then use the handout linked below for step by step instructions on downloading Pronto.
Click here for step by step instructions for downloading Pronto: Pronto Instructions Once the student has registered for a Pronto account, he will have access to real time instruction with his instructor during his or her office hours. The instructor will post his or her office hours times under the "Your Teacher" tab. During these scheduled office hour times, the student can click on the "Office Hours" tab to enter Pronto and take part in the instructors office hours. During this time the student can ask the instructor questions or practice a concept with immediate feedback. We hope the students will take advantage of this opportunity! Now that we've discussed the importance of communication, let's talk about assignment grades. GradingReview the presentation below, to consider some ways you can use the grades from this program in your classroom. Now that we've shared how to locate the grades and possible ways you could use the grades, let's discuss your thoughts. Are there ways we did not think of to use the grades? If so, please double click on the wallwisher below to share your thoughts. Remember to edit your name on the sticky note so that we'll be able to follow up with you. Now that we've discussed the grading aspect, let's end the exploration with technical requirements. Please read below to learn more about the technical requirements for NCVPS courses. Technical RequirementsAs with any new program, we know there may be some technical issues that need to be worked out. We have found that being proactive is the best solution for most technical issues. For that reason, we provide the technical requirements for all NCVPS classes. These requirements cover the hardware, software, and applications that are necessary to participate in the online environment. We also provide the websites that are used in each module. This list can be provided to your technology facilitator. Last we are providing a troubleshooting guide. This guide works through some of the basic problems you may encounter and tips to troubleshoot. If the guide does not help with your particular situation, you can always try the 24 hour helpdesk. We hope that you find these materials helpful!Click here to view the technical requirements for NCVPS courses: Technical Requirements Click here to review the Module Descriptions which include websites that students will need to access: Module Descriptions Click here for a troubleshooting guide: Troubleshooting Guide 24 Hour Helpdesk: 1-866-223-1028 We hope that you've found this material to be helpful in planning to use the NCVPS Modular Blended Learning Program.
