NBN SECTOR-8 VISION STATEMENT

To create a better quality of life by empowering the community, our neighborhoods will be safe and attractive, full of opportunity and pride, and we will address effectively the social, economic and cultural needs of all people. We will produce an exciting, involved, and better educated community with happy, healthy and secure children and adults.

NEIGHBORS BUILDING NEIGHBORHOODS (NBN)

Neighbors Building Neighborhoods (NBN) is the City of Rochester’s nationally acclaimed citizen planning process under the Bureau of Planning and Neighborhood Initiatives.

Initiated in March 1994, the City of Rochester is divided into ten planning sector areas. Each planning sector group has organized itself, created community vision statements, identified key neighborhood issues, priorities, and developed action plans to realize their goals. The ultimate goal of the NBN Process is to establish and maintain stable, healthy and diverse neighborhoods which are developed and sustained by citizens. The focus of this community visioning process has been to capitalize on the strengths and assets which residents and organizations contribute to their respective communities. For a full view of the NBN Initiative, please visit the NBN website.

A Participatory Evaluation Process (PEP) was performed in 2006-07 leading to a 2007 restructuring of the NBN Sector administration. A full PEP Evaluation Report is on file at CDC Offices. Included here is an excerpt that lists the  Findings and Recommendations by impact area for your reference.

PARTICIPATORY LAND USE PLANNING

The Local Government Commission (LGC) provides Participation Tools for Better Community and Land Use Planning which gives some background information into NBN’s new “Participatory Land Use Planning Process”. Workshops are available through the NBN Institute. (The LGC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization that provides inspiration, technical assistance, and networking to local elected officials and other dedicated community leaders who are working to create healthy, walkable, and resource-efficient communities.)
