Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)

RFC 821 defined the initial specification for SMTP, which was then amended to address various problems with SMTP, including the lack of being able to send binary files.  SMTP started becoming widely used in the early 1980's.

RFC 2821 is the latest specification for SMTP.  It was released in April 2001.
