Teacher Organization

Most teachers still use a filing cabinet of some sort to keep certain copies and/or materials. But many materials can be developed and stored on the computer. Even though each of us develops our own style, I will share mine to hopefully give you some new ideas.

Once I log onto my desktop, I enter the "My Documents" folder. This is the folder where the school will set up certain folders that all teachers will need***. Create your main folder here. I call mine by my school's name, and then the year. For example: Park County 2009-2010. When I enter the folder I have at school, I see this:

My School Folder

As you can see, I have a number of folders and loose files. The loose files are new files for this year that I have saved here, to my folder. At the end of each marking period, I sort through them and place them in the correct folders.

The main folders that I use each day are 1MP (Marking period 1), 2MP, 3MP, and 4MP. Within each of these folders are unit folders. I'm able to move these subfolders around and between marking periods if I don't finish a unit in the current marking period.

The Curriculum folder holds my year-long curriculum and pacing guides for Language Arts, and state and county pdf curriculum files.

The Plans folder holds my weekly lesson plan template, current and past lesson plans by week number (1-36). It also includes a substitute folder with plans.

The Technology folder holds my files from special programs: Photoshop, Team pictures, Promethean flipcharts,

The Class forms folder holds files (in folders) on bell work, awards, posters, forms, and loose ones that I use on a weekly basis.

The Personal folder is obvious.

The Reading folder is the only folder not in a logical place. This is because for Language Arts teachers, it is a very complex and year-long "arts" in our curriculum: fluency, comprehension, genres, strategies, word study, etc. I need it at my fingertips throughout all other units.

The other oddball folder, 2199, is there because of a special program that only I run on the computers at school: Ulead video production.

***In the "My Documents" folder on my computer, I also place a few shortcuts. The first shortcut is to my current unit of study, the second shortcut is to a document that I use everyday: While You Were Out. This document is actually a template that I fill in once I get the school's daily attendance sheet. I locate my absent students and put their names on it. I fill in the template with the day's work and then run off enough copies for all of the absent students. I attach any handouts for the day, and place them in their class's folder for the next day.
