I have no idea how you had the endurance to sit through hours of squeaks and screeches as we went from learning how to assemble and hold our instruments in elementary school to forming a fairly impressive pit band for high school musicals. Or how you maintained an ounce of sanity as you tried teach marching skills to so many students born without a sense of rhythm or coordination. Even more unbelievable is how you subjected yourself to endless early morning and summer practices, band-parent banquets, parades, games, and Florida trips. I'm not sure where that perseverance came from, but thank you. Thanks for developing the gift of music in so many of us and for maintaining patience when it had to be running thin. Only now that I'm in the field of education myself can I fully understand and appreciate the sacrifices you surely made over the years to promote the education and confidence of your motley crew of students. Thank you so much, and enjoy your well-deserved and fully earned retirement! |

I remember when Hersh made us wear clean, white spats, have our hair up in our hats, and not take the hats off until after the game. We used to complain but now I have to say that it looked much better and more professional. I remember our Florida trip in 90 degree weather and our wool uniforms! I have a lot of good band memories and thank Hersh for making some of them. Some of them we made ourselves :) Have a great retirement, NBC will miss you! |

Mr. Hershberger,
I truly enjoyed my years in band and chorus at NBC. Music was a very important part of my high school career. Thank you for your encouragement and support over the years!

Thank you for all your patience over the years. It couldn't have been easy listening to 5th graders learning to play instruments year after year. I have many fond memories from marching and am proud to have been part of the band. I wish you the best in your years after NB. |
| Karlee Brown, 2000, Senior High Chorus |
Thank you for all of the memories Mr. Hershberger. Congratulations on your retirement, and best wishes for the future. |
| Becky (Johnson) Castillo , 1994, Band |
Mr. Hershberger, I am amazed that you hadn't retired way back when I was in band. We had some grumblers back then and yet you still managed to get everyone to work together and put on a great show! You were a great band director and the memories I made working on the half-times shows and marching for parades are memories I will cherish forever. It may not have been said anywhere near often enough, but you were a great teacher and you did a great job with us students. And the lessons and discipline we learned by being in band have proven to be invaluable in life. Thank you for your many years of service and all that you've contributed through the years to hundreds and hundreds of NB students and grads. I wish you the best in your retirement. God bless!

Dr. Pepper be a pepper things go better with a coke, Brother Ray you'll hear him say "you got the right one baby" now theres a hundred thousand bucks a year spent bending one or both your ears....
I'll never forget that song as long as I live along with many others. Thank you for the only times I ever sang on stage and one of the best times of the day during school. Best wishes and enjoy your retirement! |

Thanks for all the wonderful memories! I hope you have a wonderful and blessed retirement! You deserve it! |
Alison Hoover, 2006, Chorus Nothing But Class District and Regional Festivals Musicals |
Hersh, It was a privilege working with you throughout my years at NBC. Chorus, musicals, Nothing But Class, and District and Regional Festivals; You were there through it all, and I appreciate all the time you took training me, and trying to help me achieve as much as I could musically. Some of my favorite memories from high school involve my time in Nothing But Class, early morning practices, and the annual Christmas show at the Jaffa and Cumberland. We were scared to death of your driving in the van sometimes, but we always made it safely wherever we were going. I wish you only the best in your retirement. Alison |
| Megan Stern, 2003, Chorus, Concert band, Nothing But Class |
I always had the most fun in my music classes. I think my favorite thing would have to have been the moment right after finishing a concert, whether it be chorus, band, a musical, or a show with N.B.C. I just felt so proud to be a part of that. Pulling together as a group and putting in the hard work at practice to put on a great show. We couldn't have done it without you, Mr. Hershberger. Thank you! Happy Retirement! |

Hersh, I wish you the best in your retirement. Thanks for teaching me to play the flute! :) Becky |
| Christina Holtzinger-Kilpatrick, 1995, Band |
I had so many memories with "Hersh" as we called him. I think the best were at band camp when we HATED it and he wasn't too fond of us either! Ha! He also hummed alot when we were practicing in the band room. He always cared though and we all knew it. He is a GREAT teacher and I am sure will be missed at NBC. Thanks "Hersh" for introducing me to the trumpet! Oh and I forgot....he really loved his coffee! Take care and Congratulations! |

Hey Hersh! Band was actually one of my favorite extra-curricular activites during my time at NB. When I think back to my high school years, I always remember the great times I had during football games, riding the band bus to & fro, and preparing for concerts. Your supervision and direction definitely played a part in that, because you were strict enough to keep us out of trouble (especially when Lucene was acting up and taking me down with her!) yet laid-back enough to allow us to have lots of fun. I hope that you are able to have a fullfilling retirement in which you can enjoy the little things in life! |
| Michelle (Detwiler) Cronrath, 1985, Band |
I remember my senior year I finally got to play something other than the trumpet - the chimes!! I think back to our marching band and football routines and wonder how we did them. They were much more complex than what I see today. As I said at the Middle School Spring Chorus concert, I welcomed you into Northern Bedford and my two, Andrew and Bethany, are sending you off. Thanks for letting me spend all my study halls and free time in the band room too. Thanks for all the memories and good times in band. Congratulations and enjoy your retirement - you will find yourself busier after you retire than when you were teaching! Enjoy!! |
