Swampfront Nature

Last page update: February 5, 2010
There is a freshwater swamp, pond or lake at Moorecroft. (Some would argue the word "fresh" and some would argue the word "Lake") It contains a whole set of lifeforms that campers love to find and explore. This page and it's subpages (Signs of Beaver & Frogsville) share images of discoveries around the pond. Links to the subpages are at the bottom of this page.
In this first video you will hear some of the type of instructions given before beginning:

Oh the excitement of catching and showing critters! In this one you will hear Alicia, our program coordinator for the summer of 09, helping kids identify a net full of stuff.

A Dragonfly Nymph that is living. So the dragonfly to be is still in it. Below it is a picture of one where the Dragonfly has hatched. The white thread on it is not natural. Imagine trying to take a dragonfly and pack it back into one of the empty shells! That would be hard!

In the bucket are a couple of the type of bugs that live in the water. I believe the one on the right is called a Stick Bug. The one on the left is a water beetle of some kind.

Two Newts!
An already colourful caterpillar on a piece of cloth that sets off it's colours nicely.

There is a Beaver family living in the pond, and they maintain a dam that keeps the water at as high a level as they can, which is not always the best for us because some of our trails flood and in heavy rains water starts running everywhere rather than down the creekbed. Here is a link to a page showing some of the Beaver sign.

There are plenty of frogs in this body of water! That is a good sign. It means the environment is healthy and not polluted. Let's keep it that way! We have a special page just about frogs as well.

Thanks for visiting! We'd love to hear from you at Camp.Moorecroft@gmail.com
