Trees from Stumps

New Life Second Chances

"A shoot shall come from the stump of Jesse"
Isaiah 11
Pete's "from memory" version of the Bible

One natural phenomenon found on the property is one that fit our camp theme for 2009 "New Life Second Chances." It is found when new trees grow out of old stumps or fallen logs. This takes what looks like a lost cause and starts something new out of the remnants, which paralels what God did with Jesus to save a lost world, and what God can do with each life that has rubble.

Here is a fresh shoot growing from the center of a stump near cabin 3A. Note how the bird fertilizer seems to be helping it flourish.

This next picture shows what has to be the biggest stump on the property, being at least a meter and a half to two meters across. It is starting new growth. A Salal shrub is growing on it. This is located near the end of the disc-golf course, south of the field and to the west of the swamp.

On this next one you can see the root of the young sapling growing down into the stump out of which it is determined to make a new start.

This is a trinity of trees growing from stumps, although the third one is farther back and not clear. You can see two good samples in the foreground. These are along the disc golf course, near post 5 or 7.

Trees will also grow right on fallen logs, or near them. In the first picture below you can see two large trees straddling or growing out of a fallen log.  These are just off the Moorecroft property to the north. It is interesting to watch where the roots go to grow in these situations. On both pictures you can see roots snaking around in search of nutrition and/or moisture.

This next example is very intriguing. It is a tree growing out of the side of a two meter long sawn log which is lying on the ground. It is just across the drive from the workshop, to the left as you take the road up to the swamp. When you look at it closely, you wonder why it does not topple. One presumes the roots go right through and around the log and into the ground. This is my personal favourite on the property. (Cathedral grove has my all time fave's)
