Project at a Glance:

In June 2009, 15 Canton City Schools (CCS) students and 3 teachers attended an 8-day institute entitled, “Igniting Streams of Learning in Science.”  It was sponsored by a grant and hosted by Kent State University, Akron University, and Hiram College.  Students and teachers participated in hands-on science protocols generally involving the health of local streams.

Project Objectives

-Revitalize Canton City Schools Nature Center
-Compile Grade Approriate Lesson Plans

In July of 2009, McKinley’s Igniting Streams of Learning Science (ISLS) students conducted a Summer Bridge program which involved sharing their ISLS experience with incoming freshman and the beginnings of the restoration of our Nature Center located adjacent the parking lot of the Smith Annex Building.  Next month, the 3 groups of CCS students will be presenting at the Ohio eTech State Technology Conference in Columbus.  For their project, one of the groups has developed a collection of lesson plans for grades K-12 that can be used as basic lesson material when planning a field trip to our Nature Center.  We invite you to visit our lesson plans on this Google site.  We encourage our local colleagues to consider planning a field trip to our Nature Center in the spring.
