b.      IT committee has submitted a request to the Provost Office to charge student course fees for the computer instructional facility. The fee rate came to $27/student for courses that reserve the use of the facility for instruction. Once the fee rate is approved the committee will move forward with the refresh of the computer lab.

c.       Other committees haven’t met yet, or if they have most have been discussing the impact about the university wide transformation.

6.      Faculty Meeting recap at NGRSO meeting   11/5/08

a.      The faculty meeting was mainly about the transformation.

b.      I explained the budget sweeps and how Cecily managed to save us from the worst of the money loss.  The money has been returned to the colleges, and now we must apply to have the funds returned.

c.       Our white paper led by Lisa was rejected by the Provost.  The bulk of discussion was about if we should stay out of the game or is we should make another proposal.  Our willingness to work as a team player was noted by the Dean.  The proposal that Lisa suggested was to combine us with the Office of Arid Lands.   Benefits and costs were discussed.  ISPE will continue to invest in the school, but is staying on the sidelines.  We will need to decide and put together a proposal by December 15th for implementation on July 1st.

d.      Bill Matter spoke briefly about the need to complete things for the APR and getting graduate students to take the survey.

·         O’Brian Diversity Seminar: They will be creating a 1 credit seminar in the spring where the papers of the potential guest speakers will be discussed.  They are looking to invite a total of 6 speakers, 3 from outside the University and 3 from within.  These speakers will start in the Fall 2009 semester.

Fundraising for Guest Lecture Series

·         There are several opportunities that the University and ASUA offers for clubs to raise funds.  One such option is the Spring Fling Fair.  According to past documents, clubs can raise up to $3000 for this event.  A possibility if we are interested we can pair up with student chapters within our school and split the profits.

·         As of right now there was mixed interest in pursuing this idea, but interest in pursuing other ideas for fundraising.  Should we be able to raise money it would save us the need to write grants every year, or would allow us to pursue more costly speakers.

White Papers and SNR merging with other schools.

·         CALS has been asked to draft proposals to restructure the schools within its department

·         Dr. Graumlich, Dr. McClaran and Dr. Matter are all on the committee that is overseeing the organizational restructuring of the Natural Sciences and Engineering units within CALS.

·         As it stands now, they have drafted a proposal to merge SNR, Soil, Water and Environmental Sciences, and Office of Arid Land Studies into a School of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resources.

·         The proposal was to be turned in Friday October 3, 2008 for review.

o   Should the proposal be approved it will submitted to the faculty for voting in ALL affected departments (SNR, SWES, Aird Lands)

·         The direct impact to graduate students is predicted to be minimal.

o   New students entering the department will have a different terminology to what their degree is called.

o   Current students will graduate with their currently named degree no change will take place

·         They are looking to have all changes/merges/restructuring/organizing done and implemented by the end of this fiscal year beginning of next (June 30/July 1 2009).
