Conclusion

I have learned many things from my extensive research into the development of medicine coupled with our growing knowledge of anatomy for this web project. I loved learning about ancient Egyptian medicine, my first episode, because I am planning to travel to Egypt in February 2010 for my graduation celebration trip I am giving myself. I think its important to know the history of where you are traveling to. I debunked my preconceived notions of the “Dark Ages” by researching their medicinal knowledge. I found it shocking that they performed nasal polyp removal surgeries, a surgery that I have had many times. In my final episode, I shot down another myth I believed in: Leonardo’s contribution (or lack there of I found out) to our knowledge of anatomy and thus medicine during the Renaissance. In fact, it was Harvey who we can attribute the most progression of knowledge to.

In hindsight, I am glad I put effort into this project and class because it corrected many of my preconceived notions about the history of science, math, and medicine. This project alone completely changed my view upon the progression of medicine in the western world. I have found myself even more interested in medicinal practices of various times and culture snow. I am also glad I took this class. Even though it was a lot of hard work, every week I would learn the true history of science and math, which was often the complete opposite of what I had been taught previously.

If there was one thing I could change out this project would be to insert an episode over eastern medicine. I think it is a shame eastern history is often ignored in the western world. Eastern medicine seems like a fascinating topic. Perhaps I will research it more on my own time (if I could ever find my own free time).

Modern medicine is truly a miracle to me. Without it I would have been dead at a very early age because I have cystic fibrosis. Unfortunately I cannot be a doctor because it would be very dangerous to my own health. This project allowed me to understand and comprehend the growth of medicine into what it is today. This understanding has led me to a greater appreciation for living in the time I do now and for all the wonders medicine has given me. None of my life, or even this web project because I would surely be dead by now, would be possible if it wasn’t for the contributions to the people highlighted throughout my episodes. A big thanks is required to them.
