about Narelle

Narelle
has been passionately engaged with Yoga, dance and embodied movement practices for almost 50 years. An anatomist and scientist (research and lab) by academic training, she has taught Yoga since 1988. Her ongoing hallmark inquiry and that which she ignites in her students, is of the body as felt, known, poetic space; the Embodied Ecology of our interior terrainHer teaching is infused with a rich experiential and functional anatomy.

Since 2007, Narelle has researched and developed an innovative  working of a fluidic Embodied FIGURE 8 through the body. This work profoundly impacts spinal and pelvic health, stability and alignment. Narelle would like to acknowledge Peggy Hackney for the initial inspiration for this work! You can download the free Handout Notes, 'The Embodied Figure of 8 - Core Integration Continuum' on the 'Finding Core Balance' page. These notes are currently in revision; stay tuned for a much expanded update!

Narelle is formally trained in the Iyengar method of yoga with Alan Goode with whom she Teacher Trained and Apprenticed from 2001-2009. Alan Goode was her Teacher since 1993. She acknowledges senior Iyengar teacher Genny Kapuler of NYC, as her current teacher.

Inhabiting a scoliotic landscape, Narelle's work is oriented towards and offers deep insight into practising Yoga within scoliosis and with backcare issues.  She is certified in Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Miller . When time permits, Narelle assists Elise in her scoliosis teacher trainings in the US.  Narelle continues to develop her studies in yoga for scoliosis and backcare, and shares her research in spinal, sacroliliac and related anatomy and pathology at Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis in Manhattan. She also guest teaches Spinal Anatomy and Yoga for Scoliosis in Europe. During 2011 Narelle spent a total of four months in the States, during which time she had the joy of twice dissecting  full cadavers in integral anatomy intensives with Dr Gil Hedley and continued to pursue her studies in Embodied Anatomy, and Embryology in yoga with Amy Matthews. Narelle has also assisted and taught spinal and sacroiliac anatomy and pathology for Donna Farhi in her Teacher Training and Intensives in New Zealand.

Narelle is renowned for her radiant Powerpoint presentations and deep, yet playful teachings on Spinal Anatomy; the complex illuminated! She has presented her scholarly and movement research in Yoga and scoliosis at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (2007), the World Dance Alliance Global Summit (2008), the Australian Osteopathic Convocation (2007), and most recently, at the World Congress for Low Back and Pelvic pain in Los Angeles, November 2010. For seven years Narelle served as senior tutor and lecturer in anatomy, histology and physiology at the Queensland University of Technology and The Endeavour College of Natural Health respectively. She experiences the body as a physical hologram; vibratory, resonant, and utterly interconnected with our larger ecology. Originally working in Cellular Pathology, Haematology, and Clinical Biochemistry (for which she graduated with her University Medal), Narelle's postgraduate research lies in the functional anatomy of the lumbar spine in health and dis-ease,  including lumbopelvic stabilisation, and the neurophysiology of postural control. Most recently  her work is strongly in-formed by the study of Embryology, together with readings and explorations within Biodynamic Osteopathy. Ongoingly, Narelle's research lies in the science and lived experience of scoliosis.

An ex-elite level Ballroom dancer, a choreographer, artistic director and performer, Narelle has created and directed contemporary dance research and performance projects, "Moving with Spirit", "Return to the Source", “Cathedral of the Body”, “Bones of the Earth-Body of the Land”. She is in the process of researching “House of the Broken Wing”, a performative, film and written exploration of moving in a scoliotic environment. This work is in embryonic collaboration with renowned Manhattan  visual artist, Laura Ferguson and is informed by Continuum Movement processes with Mary Abrams in NYC and Amber Gray in Sante Fe.

Narelle is a Transformation Facilitator. She takes Embodied Ecology photos for fun!
