A place for Bernards - WE'VE MOVED TO stbernardpreserve.org

  • Bubba, gone but...Jack still hates him
It seems like it was just yesterday that Bubba was trying to beat the crap out of Jack.

It was actually 2 days ago though.

Yesterday he became aggressive with a 75 lb pregnant female that was being as submissive as can be.  He's probably at 145 lbs by now and 36" high, so it felt like he might have been overdoing it a bit.

Luckily he only had to tolerate the tiny friendly girl Bernard for a few minutes, because as she was coming into the Preserve, he was on his way out to his forever home.

This will be forever home #3 for Bubba, hopefully this one sticks.

The thing is, Bubba was one of my favorites.  Like Hester, he's a bad dog, but such a loving people person dog.  He was willful, but not like Jack.  Jack is willful because he isn't really that interested in my opinion, Bubba cared, he just got overly excited sometimes.

Anyway, Bubba left us yesterday and we're sad.

Here's the cool part: he got to his new home and immediately started playing with their young female Golden! No aggressiveness at all!  Apparently he just fell in love.  I'm so happy for him and for his new people, he's just an awesome Bernard.

  • New 'Virtual Nard' techology in the planning stages
Anonymous sources report that a new technology is in the planning stages at the Nard Preserve.  This new techology, reportedly labeled 'Virtual Nard', is said to be capable of bringing the full Nard experience to you desktop, your laptop, and yes, even your phone.  Officials at the Nard Preserve were unavailable for comment.

  • Bernards in the snow

Fresh snow is such an awesome experience  when you've got St. Bernards.
The Bernards have been running and playing in the snow over the past few weeks and having nothing but fun.  It reminds me that some of us really do like winter better.  Not me though, not really

  • Bubba and Jack, best of friends, uh, well no
Bubba and Jack may or may not be trying to kill each other.  Bubba is 3 and he seems like he's always pushing it with Jack, while Jack is 5 and seems pretty tough.  I have had run-ins with both of them although Jack is far better, he's still a stubborn bastard.

Yesterday we had a small tiff which resulted in a broken bowl.  I never quite figured out what happened.  It was over before I got there.  No blood this time.  About a week ago they got into it in a huge way resulting in Jack being bitten twice. This was a stupid incident.  We had brought Pearl, Jack, and Bubba 3 bones (Dog Many).  This is the friday after thanksgiving.  We gave them all their bones, but Bubba went after Jacks resulting in a dog fight, which went on for a while, but there was no blood.  The next day we thought we should try again.  Bubba went after Jack immediately.  Bubba is taller and he basically trapped
Jack under him and bit him several times.  I was stan ding right there.  As I pulled Bubba off of Jack and put him on his back, he was still growling for a few seconds.  At that point I knew we had to start breaking Bubba of his "I'm the Princess" attitude or he was going to bite me next.  Jack had a bite on his nose and ear, poor guy.

We immediately stopped both of them from being in the bed.  We added regular training and more walks to all three dogs lives.  Finally I started making Bubba stay outside all day with the other two.  Jack and Pearl like it outside, but Bubba was just spending his days inside with me in the office.  I keep all three of them together.  If they are inside or outside, I think it helps Bubba better rea
lize he's one of the pack and not the leader.  It was definitely hard at first because he is such a people oriented dog.  He follows me everywhere and he'll pretty much do whatever you tell him.  It's just that he feels that if I'm doing things for him all the time, then he's in charge which means that no-one gets a bone until hes given his OK.

They are my bones though.  Not his.

Him and Jack started to seem to get along a lot better, actually running and playing together.  I think it's because they are both in boot camp together, I think it's making them friends.  Yesterday's issue has me concerned though.  It was short and bloodless, but still they shouldn't be fighting at all.  So far they are good today.

We'll have an extensive training session this afternoon.

  • Droolsicle
It's that time of year when the St. Bernards can finally make Droolsicles again.

If you're a nard, the recipe is very simple.

    1)  Start with a full bowl of your favorite dog food.
    2)  Eat about half of it, making sure to generate a whole lot of drool in the process
    3)  Leave the bowl alone for about 30 minutes, depending on the outside temperature.

You now have yourself a crunchy, frosty treat.

I'm doing a little review of different information sharing networks to see how best to find, identify, and collect information about St. Bernards.  Check it out here:  The Wise Bernard

  • Bubba, feeling a bit better
So it turned out that Bubba spent a significant amount of time in a flea infested state.
Apparently in the custody of one of our friendly neighborhood Animal Shelters.
This was way back in July, but he's still have skin issues.  We think we've got it under control though and he seems to be feeling a bit better.  He's still under weight, maybe by quite a lot.  He was 121 pounds yesterday.  He's very tall with big legs and feet and yet his body looks like a greyhound.  I wonder if he shouldn't be something like 160 or 170 pounds normally.

  • Underfed, dehydrated, and just as nice as can be
WTF?  I walked in the door on Friday to discover the skinniest St. Bernard I've ever seen.  He had shown up about an hour earlier.  He ran up to me and was more friendly than any other foster so far (I've had them try to eat me).   I couldn't believe how thin he was.  When I learned that Bubba came from owners who had adopted him as a rescue I was blown away.  He was hungry, dehydrated, with a horrible skin condition.  Who does this to a dog?  Why would someone "Rescue" a dog and treat it this way?  I couldn't be more perplexed and angry.

The good news he's eating and drinking and looking so much happier.   He loves to sleep in the bed and he's just as nice as can be.   A nice bath yesterday was a big help.

Recent Announcements

  • Julie - Adopted
Some very nice person adopted Julie and now she's in her own happy home.  She was with us longer than any other foster and we miss her a whole bunch.

  • LilliePad has been adopted
It was a sad day yesterday saying goodbye to our Lillie.  She's been here a while and I'll bet it will be a long time before we have 4 at the same time again (if I can help it!).  She's off to a nice family who has another Bernard for her.  Apparently one for her proclivity for sleeping.  All was well with Julie.  She seems to be doing really well with Pearl and Jack and the three of them have had a good day.

  • More pictures of Julie and Lillie
Although both dogs continue to socialize well here at the Preserve, they still share a special bond and spend a lot of time with each other.

  • A sad story

Julie and Lilly came to us on a fall day.  They had both spent somewhere between 2 months to 2 years living behind a house where the owners had moved out, but apparently came by here and there to drop off food and water.  They were both severely dehydrated.  Lillie's fur was so matted that it was like 5 inches of felt.  We had to eventually shave her completely down.  We found all kind of living and dead wildlife in her fur.  Julie's dew claws had grown into her pads and caused a horrible infection.  After a trip to the vet, a lot of grooming, shampooing (a skunk had obviously attacked them both), and a lot of TLC,  I'm happy to report that they are both doing very well.

Jack

  • Jack is the best
We found out recently that Jack has Heart Worm.  WTF??? Seriously, who can't give their dog a heartworm pill once a month?  Luckily it looks like he's going to be OK.  At least that's my take on things...

Here he is crashed out next to Mary.  I swear, she's on the other side. He worries about the time and such so he has to be on the outside.

We've taken on two new foster dogs recently and Jack has shown his amazing-ness by immediately being a calming influence.  I'll write about that adventure soon.

  • Jack - He's ours
We love Jack so much and we really want a good male to round out our pack so we've adopted Jack.  We've fallen in-love with all of the dogs that have come through the preserve, but Jack is special in a number of ways.  He has not challenged, nor given ground to Buddy.  Buddy is very much a little princess when it comes to just about everything, but Jack has ignored it except on the rare occasions that Buddy just becomes to annoying.  Then he's been both calm, but forceful in keeping Buddy in line.  In addition to this excellent temperament
, him and Pearl just seemed to get along right away.  Jack is really the first dog to come through that Pearl hasn't been completely disgusted with.  Some how Jack is just relaxed and well socialized.  We're keeping him!

  • Jackson Michigan
We went today to the Jackson Michigan Animal Shelter to pick up a dog for Savings Saints Rescue.  He was just about to have to walk that "last mile" so it was imperative that we pick him up.  We were pretty blown away.  I mean how does this wonderful guy end up at an Animal Shelter?  He's not neutered and looks and walks like a show dog.  We groomed him for a number of hours and he was clearly used to it.  What happened?  Maybe we'll never know, but it's confusing to me that a dog like this doesn't come to us the way Buddy did.  I know it's hard on owners, but please think of the dog.  Poor Jack (we've decided to name him Jack) was stuck in an animal shelter for three weeks and was almost put down.  There is a waiting line for St. Bernard owners, you just have to get the dog to a rescue like Savings Saints.  We've made a connection with this animal shelter, so we'll know now if they get another St. Bernard, but clearly there are a lot of animal shelters out there and they don't have the staff or the resources to try to get their dogs to the proper rescues.  If you've got a dog and financial circumstances make it impossible to keep him, please call a rescue league, don't just let the dog go, or tie it up out back, or drop it off at a place where the dog will be killed if he's not adopted quickly.  You'll feel better about yourself in the morning.

Buddy

  • Adopted
Today buddy left for his new home in Cleveland.  We met his new owner who drove out with her mom.  She already has an Akida mix which Buddy is going to have all kinds of fun with.  She's fostered a St. Bernard before so we know she already loves the breed and Buddy and her hit it off right away.  We'll miss you Buddy!

  • Buddy - A true mountain dog
Well we've taken a bit of the weight of buddy.  Besides cutting him back to the "Nard Preserve" diet, he's been getting all kinds of exercise in the Mountains of Tennessee.  We took a 9 day trip to East Tennessee (just west of Boone NC) and stayed in an amazing cabin overlooking a mountain lake.

  • Buddy - fleas and all
When we got Buddy he came to us complete with fleas.  We were a bit distressed about this and worried that he might not have had all the TLC he needed in the past.  Turns out that he's a very loving dog who is clearly used to having his own way in the world.  He's also overweight (not really a sign of an abused dog).  In fact, he doesn't show any signs of an abused dog (shy, flinching, food issues, etc.).  We were given Buddy through Saving Saints Rescue by a nice person who had just had the world fall out from under her.  Although tragic, it's pretty clear that she loved Buddy and took very good care of him.

Hester

  • Hester 2002 - 2009 - too young to die, too bad to live

Well Hester died this morning.  As I'm writing this, she is laying by the door.  She died in her sleep.  Yesterday was the first really bad day since she developed bone cancer.  Up until yesterday she hardly let it slow her down at all.  She bit Noah multiple times for small infractions and intimidated Balls into only eating when she wasn't around.  She was a bad dog right to the end.  We'll miss her a whole bunch.  Yesterday she didn't want to eat or drink water.  We knew it was near the end.  She wouldn't come in when we wanted her to, but finally last night we made her come in.  She was restless and crying until about 1:00 am and then she finally went to sleep.  Around 2 I checked on her and she was still sleeping.  Sometime around 4 she must have died but I don't think she suffered hardly at all.  She's now blocking the door.  Seriously, a bad dog right to the end.
