Bonzo Dog Bio

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band grew from an informal gathering of art students playing old jazz songs in the common room of the Royal College of Art in central London, back in 1962. There was a constant flow of students joining and leaving the band but by the time they turned professional in 1966, a basic line-up was established and they had their first single released, “My Brother Makes The Noises For The Talkies”.

Their first album “Gorilla” was released in 1967 and made quite an impact, which together with television appearances on “Do Not Adjust Your Set” and the “Magical Mystery Tour”, boosted their popularity.

“I’m The Urban Spaceman” saw them achieve chart success in 1968, and whilst their follow-up single, “Mr Apollo”, did not achieve the same success, their subsequent albums, “The Doughnut in Granny’s Greenhouse”; “Tadpoles” and “Keynsham”, were all popular.

Relentless touring and the lack of greater recognition eventually took its toll however, and the band broke up in early 1970. They were however contractually obliged to gather once more in the studio to record a final album, which became “Let’s Make Up And Be Friendly”.

The former Bonzos all continued to perform with varying regularity, and there was even a new Bonzo Dog Band single released in 1992, but the death of front-man Vivian Stanshall in 1995 seemed to mark the end of the band forever.

To the amazement of the fans however, the Bonzos were talked into performing one last concert in November 2005, to celebrate 40 years since the release of that first single. The space left by Vivian Stanshall was filled at the concert by celebrity fans Stephen Fry, Adrian Edmondson, Phill Jupitus and Paul Merton. The success of this concert lead to a UK tour in late 2006 and a further 2 concerts in December 2007, as well as a totally new Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band album called “Pour L’Amour Des Chiens”.

There is another concert scheduled for Friday 6th June 2008 at the London Astoria.
