Human Resources:  Key Concepts and Practices

February 2-3, 2009   9:00am-4:30pm

Nairobi, Kenya

Safari Park Hotel

Most NGO managers deal with human resources issues on a regular basis. However, many often do not receive training on how to effectively support the most important asset that an organization has—its people.

This workshop will focus on key areas of human resources: recruitment, interviewing, new employee orientation, compensation, salary benchmarking, performance management, and employment legal issues. Participants will learn the answers to questions such as:

  • What should be included in job descriptions and recruitment ads? What are best practices in new employee orientation?
  • How do we determine position salaries and how do we remain competitive?
  • What employment-related legal issues should I be aware of?
  • What are the key concepts of performance management? How do I best deal with difficult employees?

Participants will leave with an understanding of how to put important HR concepts into practice in their own organizations. Participants will be provided with guides, templates, and sample forms to take back to their organizations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet colleagues from other organizations and share approaches to human resource issues that we all face.

These two days will be a combination of information sharing, problem solving, discussion, presentations, and case studies.

The workshop will be led by Vivien Rabin and Marie McNamee. In addition, a legal advisor will be on hand to discuss important issues and answer questions.
