Restaurant, Bar & Event Facilities

Opened in September of 1925, the Aztec Hotel became a staple of Route 66 history. It catered to celebrities passing between Los Angeles and Palm Springs and hosted the events for local landowners. Through the years, the hotel has seen a series of ups and downs but has managed to maintain the ambiance for which it is known.
Today, it is listed on the national historic register and is home to 44 hotel rooms, the Mayan Bar & Grill (formerly known as the Brass Elephant Restaurant & Bar), and the Mayan Room Restaurant & Nightclub. There is entertainment 7 nights of the week ranging from karaoke to live bands and quite a few unique offerings.

ARTICLES
I recently took a day trip to Monrovia, California just to visit the historic Aztec Hotel. I met interesting residents and also discovered quirky murals and birds! I write of birds, because the hotel lobby sports 3 or 4 cages of live birds, who are quite active when company is around. They all sport distinct personalities; one of the cockatoos will scream and cry if a visitor strolls away from the cage; and only settles down once she returns. What a sweetheart. I write of birds, because the Aztec Ladies Room, located right off the Main Lobby, sported a mural of white birds. In a rather offbeat, but oddly fitting tribute, the hotel's owner was also memoralized amongst the birds, dressed in a romantic white toga. While chatting with Harold, one of the Aztec Hotel's residents, he told me that the husband of the owner is also painted on the walls of the men's room. Restored and contemporary murals of Aztecian kitsch adorn the walls and hallways of the Hotel and do much to emphasize the themetic decor. Harold guided me to the Aztec Hotel's enormous patio, which was . . . decorated with . . . garden furniture. He pointed out the youthful artist of the Ladies Room and Meeting Room murals who was relaxing at a table with friends. Although the patio is also undergoing restoration, in the far corner there is a beautiful fountain with painted images and live plantings and Aztechian flagstones adorned the patio floor. The Aztec Hotel building also hosts a barbershop
and a bar. There's a craft shop in the building with a separate entrance from the outside. In the past, that particular space used to belong to the Aztec Coffee Shop. Today, the only evidence of the Coffee Shop is a vintage stained glass sign.

MONROVIA - A new lobby and a new bar with a new name . . . for Monrovia's historic Aztec Hotel . . . Located at 311 W. Foothill Blvd. and built in 1925, the Aztec sits on historic Route 66 and its restoration is being supervised by the California Route 66 Preservation Foundation . . . "This gives us an opportunity to be able to meld the bar and restaurant into something that is more in line with the Aztec," [Kathie Reece-McNeill] said . . . "We have . . . wonderful patrons at the bar," she said. "[A] lot oflocals, parents who bring their kids here for their 21st birthday, . . . out-of-towners who know about the hotel. We want to take a step up, and a huge majority of those people will enjoy the new place." . . . The work will cost $100,000, [Glen Duncan, foundation president and project manager] said, and future plans call for restoring the hotel's exterior, which featured a series of Mayan-themed store fronts. The California Office of Historic Preservation and the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program of the National Park Service also are supervising the project.

[T]he aztec is like a plaza, they have a restaurant, bar, gift shop, barber shop, etc. on the front side of the hotel so it gives you something to do during the daytime. [I]t's also less than half a mile to downtown [M]onrovia where they have antique shops, unique cafes, and nice restaurants. [H]istoric . . . within reasonable distance to the Santa Anita Racetrack, Westfield Shopping Mall, and downtown Monrovia.

On a portion of the original Route 66 in Monrovia stands the charming Aztec Hotel . . . Besides the beautiful lobby, banquet room and adjoining patio, the Aztec houses the [Brass] Elephant [Restaurant &] Bar . . . The atmosphere is casual and familiar amid an array of ornate features. Brass railings and the stained glass provide color and class while a dozen antique lighted ceiling fans spin in whisper-quiet motion from a single belt drive.

THE BRASS ELEPHANT/THE MAYAN ROOM: [2] 1/2, The Aztec Hotel, 311 W. Foothill Blvd., Monrovia, (626) 303-3666. A great piece of history, this hotel from 1925 is a fine example (and one of the few still [existant]) of "Mayan Revival" architecture, all of which can be enjoyed in the Brass Elephant on the ground floor, and the Mayan Room up a flight of stairs. The . . . space is worth the trip. . . $
Experience by Diane Brady (See the full article: http://romantictraveling.com/AztecHotel.htm)
When it opened in 1925, the Aztec Hotel was the most ornate hotel in the town of Monrovia, California and the surrounding area . . . The hotel was successful for several years, but fell victim to the Great Depression. When the Santa Anita Racetrack opened nearby in the ‘30s the hotel was renovated and opened to host Hollywood celebrities such as Bing Crosby and Jack Benny. After World War II it again began a decline, but . . . is currently being restored. The original tile floors remain intact, and the many murals are either in very good condition or have been painstakingly restored. The rooms are evocative of the 30s and 40s . . . [S]taying here allowed us to experience a bygone time.

The pre-freeway days when drivers traveled through the heart of San Gabriel Valley cities - rather than speeding by on featureless interstates - were alive . . . at least for a few hours in the minds of a few dozen travelers. Route 66, the old Mother Road, was the theme as an offbeat bus tour took participants to sights that modern freeways pass by. "I've driven by so many of these places but never stopped," said Abby Abanes, a Duarte resident and self-proclaimed "tour junkie," as she marveled at the Mayan-themed lobby of Monrovia's Aztec Hotel. The 1925 hotel, once a bordello and a speakeasy, was one of about eight stops the group made.

[T]best live rock and roll I’ve heard for a very long time. I felt like I had been transported back to my youth. These guys were great, smooth and tight, and the songs were true rock and roll classics . . . They just lifted me up . . . My energy level skyrocketed, my mouth dropped open, my eyes popped, and then I settled down with a great big grin on my face like I had just discovered the best kept secret in the L.A. area. I looked around to make sure this was really happening, and saw a lot of people smiling and having a great time. People filled the dance floor . . . the bass player [Phillip Sayce] had played for Melissa Etheridge. Billy, the drummer had played with the Bay City Rollers, and George, the lead vocalist and guitar player, had played with the Beach Boys . . . and they all sounded great. The club is pretty cool, too. It has a Casablanca feel to it. . . [T]he audience runs the diversity gauntlet in age and cultures.
