Room 12 Programs

Music and Mentors

We will be beginning the Music and Mentors (M&Ms), a classroom music program, with a third grade class. Students will learn how to read and compose music using the recorders. This year students will be participating in Recorder Karate, where they will earn “recorder belts” for each song they learn to play. Learning to play the recorder is a requirement for my fourth grade class and will be considered part of their Art grade.

Claymation

Clay animation is a short movie using clay as characters. Claymation is a hands-on activity that allows students to explore their creativity, use their writing skills, learn to organize information, and how to work in a team.

Young Scientists

I believe all students should learn Science. Science teaches students to be creative in solving problems,  to learn from their mistakes and to figure out how things happen. In fourth grade, students will learn about 1. (Earth Science) Rocks and Minerals, 2. (Life Science) Animals, and 3. (Physical Science) Magnitism and Electricity. You can see many of the science projects we do in school by going to "Class Photo Albums."

Typing Authors

The students use Garfield Typing Pals program to learn how to properly type. Click here to see how many words you can type in a minute: Garfield Typing Program Test.

Learn with Garfield and his friends how to properly type!
This is what the program looks like. Studens learn a few letters at a time and must pass before moving on to the other letters.

Fourth graders should be able to type 26 words per minutes. After the students write, they use the AlphaSmart to type up their writing to publish it.

Reading Buddies

Every Friday afternoon, our class becomes Reading Buddies to Mrs. Tikker's first grade class. The students are paired up with a first grader and throughout the year will read with them for 30 minutes every Friday. This teaches the fourth graders leadership skills and responsibility. Furthermore, it teaches them to apply reading strategies with their Reading Buddies.

Books By You

Every year in Room 12, it is a tradition that students publish real, binded books. Knowledge Adventure® Books by You™ is a make-your-own-book software experience that inspires the love of reading and writing in children as they create and publish their own books. Award-winning actor and author John Lithgow guides the way as children choose a story line, then twist and transform it with their own ideas. Kids can add pictures, design a cover and dedicate the book to someone special. Publish a real chapter book that your child will love to read and your family will treasure forever.

Play Leaders

Four students a week will become Play Leaders to the first grade classes. As a Play Leader, students will be with the first graders during both recesses and lunch. They will teach and play with the students, help them line up and teach them proper school behavior. Being a Play Leader teaches students repsonsibility and leadership skills.
