Maciel Zortea received the Civil Engineer Degree at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2002, where he received a MSc. in Remote Sensing in 2004. In 2004 he enrolled in the Doctorate Programme in Information and Communication Science and Technologies, curriculum in Space Science and Engineering at the Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Genoa, Italy, where in 2007 he obtained his PhD. His thesis work focused on pattern recognition methodologies for environmental information extraction from remotely sensed data.

In December 2007, Dr. Zortea started his research experience as a Marie Curie Experienced Research fellow (ER), within the Hyperspectral Imaging Network, at the Department of Technology of Computers and Communications, University of Extremadura, Cáceres, Spain, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Antonio Plaza.

Dr. Zortea was integrated in a research effort oriented towards the definition and implementation of advanced hyperspectral image processing techniques, in the context of remote sensing applications, by making use of the complementary nature of spatial and spectral information available in the data. The main research activities developed as part of the team included the development of a new technique that uses spatial information to solve the specific problem of endmember extraction (selection of pure signatures in hyperspectral data). Endmember extraction is one of the fundamental and crucial tasks in hyperspectal data exploitation. The main publication outcome of the research work carried out in the context of the project was - M. Zortea and A. Plaza, “Spatial Preprocessing for Endmember Extraction,” IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, in press.

During his ER appointment, he spent a 1-month period at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (Partner 7), where he had the opportunity to work and collaborate with Prof. Dr. Jocelyn Chanussot, interacting with other members of the HYPER-I-NET team.

The Summer Schools within the project provided an interesting opportunity for experience exchange with other ESR/ER fellows. Dr. Zortea collaborated to the organization of the first HYPER-I-NET School hold in Caceres, where he was instructor in one of the scientific practice sections. He attended the second HYPER-I-NET school held in Wageningen where he collaborated as co-instructor in one of the practice sections devoted to analysis of hyperspectral data. Other training activities included collaboration for preparing one of the modulus of the on-line learning courses, available in the HYPER-I-NET platform.
