Maori Reef naming process
Rahui Rua is the name given to a deployment of reef materials by East Coast Iwi NgaTai . The name arose because at the time of deployment two (rua) rahui were in place, a rahui being a temporary customary closure place by Maori tribal elders. One rahui covered all seafood gathering at Torere Bay, home of NgaiTai Iwi and the other rahui was in place due to the fishing trawler San Cuvier being lost in a severe storm, smashing onto the rocks at Opape with the subsequent loss of two lives, another two crew being saved. It might be said that out of the closures has grown has sprung new life, and a new beginning. Certainly in the event of more rahui, a place of abundance for local fishermen to use has been created. |
