Who Wants To Kill Jessie (Who Killed Jessie) (Kdo Chce Zabit Jessii) (Vorlicek, 1966)

Bil's rating (out of 5)

BB.5

Deliriously campy science-fiction film about husband and wife scientists who are both trying to make breakthroughs at work.  The wife has created a serum that gives troubled sleepers pleasant dreams but, in removing their nightmares from their minds, brings their visions to life in the real world.  After her husband reads a comic strip involving anti-gravitational gloves that could be useful in his research and then dreams about the cartoon’s characters, his wife grows jealous and applies her science to his brain.  In doing so, she brings into modern-day Prague a gun slinging cowboy, a beefy muscleman who destroys everything in his path and a gorgeous blonde bombshell of a heroine (Olga Schoberova, the first Czech model to make the cover of Playboy), all three of whom leave destruction wherever they go while speaking in comic bubbles that appear above their heads.  There’s a lot of silliness, appropriately awkward performances and strange holes in the plot, but the nature of this kind of entertainment is such that a lack of quality does it no harm.
