Made In Heaven

Bil's rating (out of 5)

B.5

Directed by Alan Rudolph

USA, 1987

Annoyingly sappy schlock from director Alan Rudolph, whose films can usually be counted on to be anything but cheesy. Timothy Hutton plays a young man in the 1940s who dies in a car accident and goes to the great beyond. There he meets and falls in love with a woman (Kelly McGillis) who has yet to be born, so when her soul leaves heaven for earth he insists on following her. Trouble is, finding her once he returns to the world he left behind so many years before is a bigger challenge than he ever expected. In an odd cameo, Hutton's then-wife Debra Winger appears a male angel (complete with stubble and shortly cropped blonde hair) who pops up from time to time to help our hero on his quest. When it's not being maudlin it's just a plain boring movie with dull characters and a pretentious sense of romance.
