Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, The (Powell, Pressburger, 1943)

Bil's rating (out of 5)

BBBBB

During an army protocol practice run, a near-retired Colonel is appalled at the behaviour of World War II soldiers and ruminates on the days of his youth when, he believes, things were different. The epic story covers his entire life and career, and the love of three women (all played magnificently by Deborah Kerr) that made it all worthwhile for him. The colour cinematography is stunning, while the period detail enriches the terrific story. Anton Walbrook shines in a supporting role, while Roger Livesey is fantastic in the titular lead. A stunning achievement in every respect.
