Bank Dick, The [1940]

Bil's rating (out of 5)

BBBBB

Directed by Edward F. Cline
USA

The incomparable W.C. Fields presents some of the funniest jokes ever assembled in one movie. As star and writer (under the pseudonym Mahatma Kane Jeeves), he creates one of his most memorable and beloved comic extravaganzas about a good-for-nothing drunken lout who manages to become a filmmaker, a thief-nabbing hero and a bank security guard all in one day. Once installed in his new job, he convinces his daughter's fiance, who works as a teller, to steal 500 dollars from the bank and put it towards some junky stocks he has his eyes on. The outcome is an absolute scream, with Fields giving a stellar performance that is still imitated today and the supporting cast around him shining bright.
