My father (Robert) tells a story about the time they lived in California. He says his father (Warner) ran a furniture business that catered to the Navy families that were stationed out there. He would buy used furniture from service men as they were being transferred out of the area. Then sell the same furniture back to another family that was being transferred to the same base. He had what appeared to be an elaborate pricing system that was based on what inventory he already had in his warehouse. He would tell the families moving out of the area that he already had a large supply of the more sought after items (like lamps, beds, couches) and give them a very minimal amount of money for those items. But would make a big deal about some of the more common items (like rugs, silverware) and pay a larger fee for them. Then reverse the process for the families he sold items to. This would maximize the profit.

 This is my grandfather.
