Organ in the Sheldonian Theatre
Organ in the Sheldonian Theatre
Work began on the design of the new organ in 1994 under the supervision of the internationally acclaimed recitalist Simon Preston. In the knowledge that the organ would have a variety of uses it was decided that the instrument should replicate the character of several historic organs, covering different genres of organ building in a single instrument. The four different styles of voicing represented in the instrument are:a nineteenth-century English Romantic style, after the builder Willisa; an early eighteenth-century English style, after the builder Father Smith; a nineteenth-century French Romantic style, after the builder Cavaille-Coll, and an eighteenth-century Swabian (South German) style, after the builder Riepp. The organ, built by Richard Wood (a fifth-generation organ builder) of J Wood and Sons Ltd of Bradford, employs the Bradford system, a generic expression used to describe digital organs which use a system devised by the University of Bradford as their basis for sound generation. The system is unique in that it creates pure new wave forms uncluttered with sound picked up as part of the recording process. The organ, which has been installed along- side the previous organ (by Willis) has no pipes, and uses 26 cabinets of loudspeakers which are placed around the theatre, mainly inside the Jackson organ case.
