Member Profile - Jimmy Areias
Yes, I know his name is all over this issue of the Court Report. But the guy is organizing the General Meeting again. We really should get to know him better. Photo at left is of Jimmy and his wife, Marcie.
CR: Where did you grow up? Any memories?
JA: Los Banos, CA in the central valley.  I grew up in the country, memories include spending time at our family dairy, riding horses with my grandfather or just doing something outside with my siblings, cousins, and/or friends. I didn't watch much TV and I'm thankful for it.

CR: When and where did you first start playing tennis? What attracted you to the game? What do you like about it?
JA: I first started playing tennis when I was around 10 years old in some peewee summer tennis clinic and caught on fairly quickly, I remember winning a warm can of Pepsi for rallying volleys 10 times.   I think I averaged playing a few times a year until high school where I played singles and mixed doubles with my older sister.

CR: What's it like being VP on the board? What do you enjoy about it? Would you like to encourage others to participate, to serve on the board?
JA: Being on the board has been a fulfilling experience and it has given me a new outlook and appreciation of not just tennis events but all organized events I attend.  I would strongly recommend everyone give it a try, it's simple when you're accompanied by well rounded and talented volunteers.

CR: How long have you been a member of the club? What do you value about it?
JA: 4 years.  Initially, I joined to meet people in the area to play tennis.  I continue to be part of the club for the events including tournaments, USTA, general meetings, and the clinics.  My favorite event is the Team Tennis tournament!

CR: Your favorite match that you have played? Tell us a little about it. Of if you want to talk about two, please do.
JA: My favorite tennis matches..
1. The day of my wedding I played with my Uncle Albert near Pismo Beach.  It was just a great day, we had a view of the ocean and it was great to incorporate tennis into that day with one of my favorite tennis partners.
2. An Ultimate Tennis championship match.  It was back December 2008 and I think is was 50 degrees, it was freezing and a long drawn out match.  I was worried I may not play my best under pressure which I didn't but I held on for the victory without frostbite.

CR: Your favorite tennis shot? Which shot gives you the most pleasure when you hit it?
JA: My favorite tennis shot is definitely any returned shot my opponent thought was a winner and I'm able to get it back.  Winning those points are great!

CR: Your favorite tennis pro? Probably more than one. And why?
JA: Of the current players, Federer because he is Swiss and excellent and the Bryan brothers because they just seem to have fun while they're playing.

Photo at left is Jimmy longboarding.
CR: What do you do for work? Do you like it? If so, why?
JA: I'm an account rep for an IT consulting.  I really enjoy and am thankful because 1. it's a job in this economy 2. the company treats both employees and their customers better than any other company I'm aware of and 3. we have great reference accounts which make my job much easier.

CR: Any hobbies, other pursuits besides tennis, other passions?
JA: A partial list includes Golf, Mountain Biking, Ping Pong, Skateboarding, Wake Boarding, Riding horses, Flying, and Traveling.  Ice Hockey is the latest hobby I've picked up but I need to play more.  My perfect day is a long day of Snowboarding with a good dinner and cold beer!

September Mixed Doubles Tournament Review
Under overcast skies, with weather forecaster’s “chance of rain” in our minds, 24 teams of mixed doubles gathered at Rengstorff to compete for bragging rights. The clouds soon went away and after three rounds of tennis in eight hours, winners in three flights emerged. The teams were divided into three flights according to their computer rating.

The team of Lori Cruz-Spray and her partner Steve Spray (photo at left) was a model of efficiency, losing only 5 games in the first round, 4 in second and beating Cindy Jeung and Tony Serksnis in the final, 6-1, 6-2. Hanna Bui and Taeck Chiang won the consolation final, 6-0, 6-2, over Ying Zhou and Denis Goinard.

In the second flight, Catherine and Michael Puzon won over Jennifer Doniach and Madan Venugopal, 7-5, 6-1. Photo to the left is of all 4 division 2 finalists. Both teams defeated seeded teams on their way to the finals. Martina and Ara Hamamjian beat Mara Dumond and Douglas Woolverton in the consolation final, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0. The Hamamjians “enjoyed” marathon matches as all three rounds went to the 10-point super tie break to settle the outcome.

Faye Toolami and Doug Anderson (photo to left) won the finals of the third flight beating Jan Dyche and Larry Squires, 6-3, 6-3. Jan and Larry, both said to be well over the age of super seniors, deserved special recognition for being the oldest team to reach the finals. Cynthia Newton and Tomas Exposito won the consolation over Debbie Ryan and Karl Mellon, 6-0, 6-4.

The weather turned out to be that of a typical fine autumn California day. The players along with their friends and family had a great time playing, watching in the stands and socializing with each other. Katherine Altemus assisted me in directing the tournament. While the food committee did their usual outstanding job of keeping all of us fed all day from morning juice and coffee through lunch to afternoon snacks on leftovers.

Here are three links. The first features quotations for the somewhat serious tennis player; the second is more humorous and includes unterances by and about those bad boys of tennis Ilie Nastase and John McEnroe; and the third is for the poets among you. It offers blogs, articles, and poems about tennis. Hope all three links inspire you.
